Messi, Ter Stegen and De Jong make the cut

UEFA announced on Thursday the 12 nominees for the Champions League position awards, which will crown one goalkeeper, one defender, one midfielder and one forward as the best performers of last season’s European Cup, and three Barcelona players have made the cut.

Marc-André ter Stegen is the first nominee alongside champion Alisson and finalist Hugo Lloris, and it’s hard to see anyone but the Brazilian getting the award here. Which is deserved since Alisson was fantastic for the Reds all season.

There are no Barça defenders in the list, although Gerard Piqué finished fifth behind Matthijs De Ligt and Liverpool trio Virgil Van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson, who just missed the three-man shortlist. Van Dijk wins this one, of course.

Frenkie De Jong is the next Blaugrana on the list, forming a trio of midfielders with Jordan Henderson and Christian Eriksen from the two finalists. De Jong obviously earns the spot for his performances at Ajax, but it’s hard to see him winning especially with Henderson being the champion’s captain and having the best game of his career in that night at Anfield.

The only Barça player winning one of these awards is Lionel Messi, who is joined by champion Sadio Mané and Cristiano Ronaldo (for some reason). Messi was the best player on Earth last season and the Champions League’s top scorer, so we don’t even need to worry about him not winning this. But the fact that one of Mohamed Salah or Dusan Tadic is not on this list is just LOL.

The 2018/19 Champions League position awards will be presented on the same night of the 2019/20 group stage draw, which takes place Thursday, August 29 in Monaco.
