Much ado about nothing?

Atlético Madrid has quietly withdrawn their complaint lodged in front of La Liga against Barcelona over the Antoine Griezmann transfer, according to Diario SPORT. The capital club had alleged that Barça owed them money after the blaugrana paid Griezmann’s 120 million release clause. Atléti alleged that Barcelona had already agreed the deal before the release clause was lowered from 200 million to 120 million. Because of this, Barcelona would owe 80 million, according to their logic.

However, the complaint never really got off the ground, it seems. Why? Well, because the league’s Licensing Committee never sided with Atlético. But why not? Well, the report says, it’s because the team itself withdrew the complaint, as they had no chance of winning.

Atléti still has a case with the Spanish federation that has not been withdrawn. However, SPORT says that it has a slim chance of succeeding, and even if it did, there would be only a light punishment for Barça for negotiating with Griezmann when he was still under contract with another team. The Madrid club would not get their 80 million.

One other possibility would be a lawsuit through the civil legal system, but again, the report says they would have very little chance of receiving the money they’re after.
