Spain manager Luis Enrique discussed what he wanted out of his 24 man squad this week. The former Barcelona boss also spoke about his former full-back Jordi Alba after calling him up for the first time as Spain boss.
“I don’t have to base my decisions on public opinion,” he said.
“In this world, making decisions is a very complicated thing. There’s no turning point about my decision to call Jordi Alba.
“Nothing has changed. I don’t have any personal problems with any player. There have been no calls or anything.
“In this room there’s no-one who knows Jordi Alba better than our staff on a professional level.
“When it comes to calling or not calling a player, there are things that can help. Not only are we influenced by their quality.
“That’s the case with Jordi Alba. The decisions were made by my staff. He’ll be one of our captains as he’s the player with the third-most caps.
“However, let’s not overdo it. I don’t have to clarify anything about Jordi Alba. Everyone’s called up when they’re called up.
“I’ll greet him and welcome him, that’s it. The same goes for our other new faces. My job is to make decisions and not be affected by my personal relationship with the players. The players have to understand that.”
“Who I’d like to resemble in the squad? Jordi Alba, even though I’m a bit taller…”
