Josep Maria Bartomeu insisted that Guardiola was a “genius.”
FC Barcelona’s club president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, has extended a public welcome to the eventual return of former manager and player Pep Guardiola.
The Manchester City boss had recently revealed that he would like to be in charge of youth teams in the future, and his preferred destination was the Catalan club.
“He’s a genius and the doors of his home are open for whenever he wants to come,” Bartomeu said in an interview with The Times.”The other day I read that he would like to take over La Masia in the future, which seems perfect to me.”
Guardiola left after four very successful seasons in charge of the FC Barcelona first team, citing exhaustion from the pressures of managing the club. Rumors of a fallout between the manager and the club president at the time, Sandro Rosell, an associate of Bartomeu’s, were also a possible hidden reason behind the decision.
“That is what we offered him when he said he wanted to leave because he said he was tired of the pressure,” Bartomeu continued. “So his return would be great news.”
Bartomeu also assured fans that Lionel Messi was not leaving. ”Messi will end his career at Barcelona,” he said. ”He doesn’t want to leave and our project is to turn him into a one-club man and surround him with great players. We don’t want to sell the great players we have.”
