The defender’s recovery is one week behind schedule
Samuel Umtiti was supposed to be back to running this week, but instead, he won’t get there until next week, according to Diario AS. The French defender has been out for a month with pain in his right knee. There is not an abundance of information direct from the club about the injury, although reports say that he is getting treated to heal damaged cartilage in his knee. This procedure has been a “relative success,” according to AS.
There is a possibility that the player may require surgery, but the club wants to avoid that if possible. The healing process was supposed to allow Umtiti to be running by now, but in the end it’s been decided that he wait one more week.
Originally there was hope that he would be available to play against Rayo Vallecano to pick up rhythm to be in contention to start against Inter Milan and Betis. But now, he would only be coming back after the international break, meaning he would be ready to play against Atlético Madrid on the 24th of November. He would have been, in this scenario, out for two months by that stage.
With an injury to Thomas Vermaelen, Barcelona do not have any fit senior centerbacks in reserve with Gerard Piqué and Clément Lenglet starting. Youth player Chumi has been called up to make up the numbers, and it remains to be seen if Barça try to buy another defender in the winter transfer window.
