The defender’s injury was not as bad as feared
Gerard Piqué scored, but he picked up a knock in FC Barcelona’s 1-1 draw with Espanyol. Gerard Moreno came flying in as the defender cleared the ball, clattering into his leg, and seemingly injuring him.
There were fears Piqué would be out for the UEFA Champions League match against Chelsea, but tests were done on his knee, and it’s not as bad as it was once feared.
According to Catalunya Ràdio, he has an injury to his outer ligament on his right knee. Piqué is said to be desperate to play the second leg of the cup semifinal, this week against Valencia. The team doctors, however, advise more caution. He may miss the next few games, but by resting up, he’d be all set for that crucial Chelsea match.
Samuel Umtiti is suspended against Getafe, Thomas Vermaelen is injured, while Yerry Mina is yet to make his debut.
