It’s not just Luis Suarez - Griezmann, Ronaldo & Benzema are struggling for goals too

La Liga’s finest are all misfiring

Rightly or wrongly Luis Suarez has come under fire this season despite Barcelona’s unbeaten start to the season that sees them four points clear at the top of La Liga going into the international break.

Suarez has managed just three goals and one assist in eight La Liga appearances and Paco Alcacer’s double against Sevilla will surely prompt some calls that he should start in the Uruguayan’s place when Barcelona resume top flight action against Leganes.

According to Opta, Suarez is falling well short of what is expected:

The 30-year-old is clearly out of form and we’ve also been told he has a cyst on his knee which seems to be hampering his performances.

The departure of Neymar and the injury to Ousmane Dembele have also not helped his cause, while Ernesto Valverde’s formation, with Messi in the middle, also does not suit Suarez.

Despite his struggles, however, Valverde has continued to back the striker and we can only hope that Suarez can find his way back to form after the international break.

But it’s not just Suarez who is having a tough time of it in front of goal and a quick glance at the top scorers in La Liga shows some surprising names - Simone Zaza in second place behind Messi for instance.

Real Madrid’s curious start to the season is reflected in the return of their forwards, Cristiano Ronaldo has one goal and two assists in seven La Liga appearances, the same return as Karim Benzema. When it comes to goals it has been Marco Asensio and Isco, with four each, who have been doing the business for Madrid.

Over at Atletico Madrid, it’s another familiar story, Antoine Griezmann has two goals and two assists in nine La Liga outings and, interestingly, when La Liga resumes Atletico Madrid welcome Real Madrid to the Wanda Metropolitano.

As it stands after 11 games, and aside from Messi, all Liga’s big name goalscorers are misfiring, not just Suarez - is it time to cut him some slack?
