Lionel Messi’s ghost goal has renewed the technology debate
As La Liga gets closer to having VAR in each of the league’s games next season, the need for the solution has become more obvious.
It became really obvious when over the weekend in one of the biggest league games of the season, Barcelona were not awarded what was clearly a goal by Lionel Messi.
La Liga president Javier Tebas is clearly all in on VAR, and found the incident a great chance to discuss the league’s need for technology.
"Everyone in Spain saw that it was a goal so how can I say that I didn't see it?" said Tebas.
"If I say that it wasn't a goal then people will see that I'm blind. Hopefully, next season, VAR can solve these issues.
"We need VAR technology. In LaLiga, we have been requesting it for two years and have a worked a lot on it
"There's a real willingness to bring it in on our part and from the Technical Committee of Referees and we'll have it next season."
"People are seeing just how VAR will work now as it is being used in other places," Tebas said.
"Technology still has problems. Everyone here talks about it but in Italy they have problems with the application of it.
"It is the same in Portugal and in Germany. I don't think we've made a fool of ourselves."

Despite Tebas’ words and the weekend’s controversy, there seems be no rush to implement VAR, but hopefully we should see it introduced in Spain next season.
