Ernesto Valverde wants a new starting-caliber player
The Barcelona board doesn’t think the current Barcelona squad can win the UEFA Champions League, according to a report from Diario SPORT. Therefore, new signings in the upcoming winter transfer window are essential, or so says the report.
It goes on to say that Ernesto Valverde wants Barcelona to try to sign a player who can fight for a spot in the starting XI, not a player who will simply add depth.
Luis Enrique supposedly had asked for players to add depth to the squad, which meant player such as André Gomes, Lucas Digne, and Paco Alcácer were added.
But Pep Segura, the sporting director, agrees with Valverde that more is needed to go beyond domestic competitions this season. Barcelona need creative midfielders to challenge Andrés Iniesta and Ivan Rakitić.
That’s all well and good, but the question is whether the board can deliver on those high-quality signings while also offloading the dead weight in the upcoming window. After all, in the summer, the club said publicly that one or two more players would come after Ousmane Dembélé. In the end, none came.
