Ronald Koeman and Jorge Sampaoli are also on the list, according to a report in Spain.
Luis Enrique remains coy over his future, but Spanish outlet Don Balon claims it would take a miracle for him to remain for another year.
The report also says the chosen one to replace him could be Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp. Klopp has done brilliantly at Anfield and at Borussia Dortmund and if the report is to be believed, the Catalan giants have taken notice.
Supposedly, the players do not want Luis Enrique to continue. (It should be said this contradicts public declarations by the team captain Andrés Iniesta.)
Anyway, Don Balon claims the other names on the list are:
- Ernesto Valverde: Current manager of Athletic Club Bilbao and former manager of Valencia, Olympiacos, Villarreal, and Espanyol, as well as former Barcelona player.
- Eusebio Sacristán: Current Real Sociedad manager, former Barcelona B and Celta manager and Barcelona player.
- Ronald Koeman: Current manager of Everton, former manager of Southampton, Valencia, and Benfica, as well as several Dutch clubs. Former assistant manager at Barcelona and the Dutch national team, as well as former player of FC Barcelona (famously scoring the winning goal in Barcelona's first European Cup final win.)
- Jorge Sampaoli: Current Sevilla manager, former Chilean national team manager who won Copa América twice,
- Thomas Tuchel: Current Borussia Dortmund manager and former Mainz 05 and FC Augsburg II manager.
- Laurent Blanc: most recently the manager of Paris Saint-Germain, previously the manager of France and Bordeaux. Former FC Barcelona player and a World Cup winner with France.
How reliable is this report? Well, it remains to be seen, but the mood in the dressing room it describes seems much more dire than I would assess based on public behavior and declarations.
On the other hand, it’s clear Luis Enrique has at least not decided yet whether to stay or not, so it would only be natural for FC Barcelona to prepare possible alternatives. They don’t want to be caught by surprise.
With that said, is this list something that ultimately came from a source inside the club? Or was it just a list any random person could have drawn up given the parameters of “think of 6-7 managers that could get the Barcelona job”? I don’t know, but honestly, they would probably be close to indistinguishable things anyway.
