He's happy to stay
Barcelona fans have been screaming for a new right-back to be signed in the January transfer window, but that probably won't happen because the current player in that position that was supposed to be sold will be staying at the club.
According to reports in Catalonia, Aleix Vidal has agreed to remain a Blaugrana at least until the end of the season, and has been assured he won't be sold by the club as we enter the last week of the window. There have been reports of deals for Shakthar Donetsk's Darijo Srna and Valencia's João Cancelo (this one for the summer), but it looks as though nothing will change within the squad, and the right-back situation won't be addressed with a new signing.
Coach Luis Enrique has begun to trust Vidal a lot more after watching Aleix put on great performances in his last three appearances (against Borussia Mönchengladbach, Hércules and Las Palmas, when he scored his first goal for Barça) and increase his intensity and dedication to training. The biggest problem Enrique had with Vidal was his lack of intensity in the practice sessions, but the player is working harder now, has earned more minutes and is doing great in those minutes.
The feeling among the coaching staff is that Sergi Roberto now has real competition in his position, and that will benefit both Roberto and Vidal as they battle for minutes in Champions League knockouts and big La Liga matches.
The board is prepared to sign a new right-back in the summer regardless of whether or not Luis Enrique stays as first team coach, but the general idea at the moment is to trust Vidal and Roberto and see if they can contribute to success in the second half of the season.
