Seriously, how can you miss these?
Lionel Messi was, once again, beyond words in Barcelona’s triumph over Eibar SD. The crazy thing is though, if you look at the statsheet only, you may miss it.
That’s because Messi set up SEVEN chances with otherwordly passes, chances that should have been goals and thus, counted as assists for the Argentine.
Instead, they were misses - and one was wrongly called offside - and Messi was credited with no assists.
Here’s the video:
The first one is a dink over the top that Luis Suarez latches onto, but overhits woefully. Next is a mazy dribble that ends in a through ball to Neymar, whose shot is parried by the keeper. The third one is similar, a through ball towards Neymar cutting in from the left, his shot saved by the keeper’s foot.
The fourth one is a classic Messi pass, lofted in from the right over the defense. Arda Turan is all alone in front of goal, pretty much any shot is going to end up in the net, but instead, he miscontrols. He seems to have been caught off guard that Messi actually successfully completed the pass.
The fifth one is a lofted ball which Suárez is unable to cut back successfully to an open Neymar - though actually it would not have been an assist for Messi had Neymar scored.
The sixth one is another pass to Neymar, this time Neymar rounds the keeper and is sure to score but he is called back for a non-existent offside. Blame this one on the ref.
And in the last one, Messi sets up Ivan Rakitić on the right, but the Croatian’s shot is saved.
