Gerard Piqué and Luis Enrique “Feud”

It’s not a big deal.

Be skeptical of claims that Luis Enrique and Gerard Piqué are feuding. The defender is drawing fire from many sides after comments he made to the stands to an unknown party. He appeared to have said something along the lines of “you saw those, right?” as Barcelona drew 1-1 with Villarreal amid two clear handball penalties not called committed by the same players minutes apart.

Luis Enrique during the press conference simply said that everyone had a right to say what they wanted to say and express themselves in the way they want to, but that he preferred if the team rose above it and focused on their own performance.

He noted that rising above those situations that caused anger was “difficult,” and that the easy thing to do was to “cry and complain.”

But he never criticized the defender directly, instead saying that everyone was entitled to their opinion, and that the player who is a consummate professional and a vital piece in the set-up had a “respectable” opinion.

"The press must be over the moon to have this story about Pique and the refs," Luis Enrique noted wryly. And man, is he right.

While refereeing decisions will certainly take center stage considering the developing story lines, at the end of the day, unless Barcelona step it up from the past few matches, they’re not going to win trophies regardless.
