Why does Lionel Messi walk so much during Barcelona games?

Pep Guardiola has a genius explanation

Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi is the best player of all time, and he's fascinating in every aspect. Very few players in history possess the full package and the ability to score, pass and dribble better than everybody else on the pitch, or the sport for that matter.

Messi is also fascinating by the manner in which he plays: exclude the amazing dribbles, passes and goals, and you'll see Messi walking around the pitch for about 70% of the game. He looks completely lazy, uninterested in what's going on, and all of a sudden he has the ball on his feet and it seems like something switches in his brain and he goes into Assassin Mode.

So why does Messi walk around so much? Does he really not care about the game until the ball is at his feet? I'll let Pep Guardiola, the coach that turned Messi into the best player of all time, explain Leo's style:

“Look at Messi, it looks like he’s walking around the pitch….he sees that he’s alone; when he sees that they’re watching him, he distances himself…

“He spends the game walking, x-raying every single moment. He’s the player who runs the least in La Liga – but when the ball comes to him, he has the complete X-ray of space-time. He knows exactly where everyone is. And Pam!”

Who's "Pam", Pep? Anyway, that's a perfect description from Guardiola. Messi does walk a lot, and then, out of nowhere, PAM! And that's exactly what he's done throughout his career. What a genius.
