There's some smart people on that City office...
Denis Suarez has been one of the pleasant surprises of the season so far for Barcelona. Signed in the summer from Villarreal for a mere €3.25 million buy-back clause, Denis has impressed ever since preseason, having no difficulty adapting to a more central role in midfield and evolving with every game. And Denis' rise isn't just good for Barça, because another team is making easy money.
When Manchester City sold Suárez to Barça back in 2013, they included a clause in the transfer deal that would have the Blaugrana pay City an €800k performance bonus for every 10 first team appearances Denis made while in contract with Barça. They didn't make any money in the first three years since Suárez played for Barça B and on loan at Sevilla and Villarreal, but now that the player is doing well with the Blaugrana seniors, City will make some money.
Denis has already made nine appearances this season (seven in La Liga, two in the Spanish Super Cup), and as soon as he plays again, Barça will have to make the first deposit. And that will continue for every 10 extra apperances Suárez makes while playing for the Catalans in his current contract, which is valid for the next four seasons.
So, basically, Barça will owe City more than €10 million if Denis does really well in the next five years. Are we sure this is a great deal?
