Some key updates from the Spain captain

Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets has been talking about Lionel Messi’s future and rumors he’s wanted by Major League Soccer clubs ahead of Spain’s Euro 2020 semi-final against Italy on Tuesday.

Messi is currently out of contract after his deal with Barcelona expired on June 30. The Argentine is expected to stay but it’s not clear when an extension will be announced with Barca seemingly now in a rush to offload players to meet La Liga salary cap rules.

Yet Busquets seems pretty calm about the situation and says he is confident that the club can do what it takes to keep Messi at the Camp Nou.

“You have to give him [Messi] time. I trust the president, the people who are working and the feeling that Leo has,” he said. “Koeman has done a good job and you have to give the project stability and time, I’m sure it will go well.”

Busquets’s future has been in the headlines recently too with rumors that MLS clubs are keen to tempt the midfielder to the United States. However, the 32-year-old was quick to play down the speculation.

“They say so many things, perhaps they have made the wrong representative or Sergio. I am very comfortable at Barça and I have a contract; I have had a good season and I don’t know anything about the offers they say.”

The midfielder’s current Barcelona contract runs until 2023, although there have been rumors he could sign a new deal that includes a pay-cut but runs for another two to four years.
