Three defenders, a midfielder, and a striker
Ronald Koeman will ask for three defenders, a midfielder, and a striker as he tries to refresh Barcelona’s squad, according to a new rumor. With the manager forcing Samuel Umtiti, Arturo Vidal, Ivan Rakitić, and Luis Suárez out of the squad, replacements will need to be identified, and in addition, certain other players will be needed.
No goalkeeper will be necessary, that is unless one were to depart. However, a central defender will be required to replace Umtiti. Eric García (Manchester City) has been strongly linked, although he is right-footed, unlike Umtiti.
To reinforce the fullback positions, a right-back could be signed to compete with Nélson Semedo, and a left-back to compete with Jordi Alba, especially if Junior Firpo leaves. Pervis Estupiñán (Osasuna) and Rayan Aït-Nouri (Angers) are rumored options that could come at a low cost.
To cover for Vidal and Rakitić, a “physical” midfielder will be required by the manager. Sergio Busquets will likely remain in the team, and Sergi Roberto will stop being fielded as a right-back and concentrate on being a midfielder. Miralem Pjanić arrives, too, and in theory perhaps so could Philippe Coutinho. The Brazilian just won the treble on loan to Bayern Munich, but it’s not known if he will remain with the Catalans now that his loan is due to end. Donny Van de Beek (Ajax) and Fabián Ruiz (Napoli) have been linked with Barcelona, but this report tells us that the Catalans don’t have the money for them. It’s to be seen who might fit the bill.
With Francisco Trincão and Pedri signing on, plus the development of Ansu Fati, and the return of Ousmane Dembélé from injury, the team seems set as far as wingers. However, to cover for Suárez’s departure, Lautaro Martínez (Inter Milan) seems to be the chosen one. Memphis Depay (Olympique Lyonnais) has been mentioned as a possible signing should Lautaro not come.
