The 49-year-old returns after five months away

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed on Tuesday that Luis Enrique will return as manager of the Spain national team and replace Robert Moreno.

Enrique stepped down from the position in June because his nine-year-old daughter was seriously ill, and she tragically passed away in late August.

Moreno took the reins and helped Spain qualify for Euro 2020, although he always said he would step down if Enrique indicated he would return.

Reports have claimed that Moreno left the Wanda Metropolitano in tears on Monday after Spain’s 5-0 win over Romania after finding out he was going to be replaced.

Moreno was reportedly “upset, angry and surprised” that the whole thing had happened behind his back.

However, RFEF president Luis Rubiales told a press conference they found out through Moreno that Luis Enrique wanted to return and “nobody can feel tricked.”

It’s not clear if Moreno will return to his former role as assistant coach. Rubiales was asked about it and said only “Luis Enrique can choose his own staff.”
