It’s not all about the numbers for Griezmann

The Frenchman’s defensive ability is underrated

Four goals and three assists. Those are the only numbers people look at whenever talk about Antoine Griezmann’s form sparks up. Four goals and three assists in 15 games. For a player worth 120 million euros, it is obvious that more is expected, which gives reason for the media to make claims such as he is ‘out-of-form’. However, it is unfair to judge the France international’s performances solely based on his numbers in front of goal. Griezmann’s efforts to push the team forward remain practically unmentioned.

Dissecting his performances, you will see the immense amount of defensive work he does that goes unnoticed. Whenever Barça lose the ball and the opponents are in the driver’s seat, threatening the Catalans in their final third, Griezmann always tracks back to give a hand to the defenders.

His defensive ability is underrated. He has mastered the art of clean tackles and gracefully stealing the ball from his opponents. Perhaps, he isn’t showering the team with goals, but his role within the squad is crucial in their development of play.

The French forward might not have the creative skills of Neymar, but he brings a great deal of aid to the team and that is essential. Even Griezmann has acknowledged the fact that he is here to help, whether that be by scoring or dropping back to help out the backline.

“I’m more of a team player, in the way [I] try to manage the movements of others and [in the wayI] try to be of use to my teammates,” he added. “And If I can score then it’s much better, but it’s not my main aim. If we get the three points, I’m happy with myself.”
