The manager originally resigned due to a personal tragedy

Luis Enrique is the favorite to be Spain’s manager for the upcoming European Championship, according to Cadena COPE. The former Barcelona coach resigned his post as Spain’s boss in June under tragic circumstances: his nine-year-old daughter was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Sadly, she died in late August. She died

Amid this personal loss, his assistant, Robert Moreno, took over as coach. At the time, he publicly promised he would allow Luis Enrique to return as manager if the latter wanted to retake his spot.

The report says Moreno will not be Spain’s coach at the Euros, and the one likely to succeed him is Luis Enrique.

Luis Enrique is a former player who became known as one of Barcelona and Spain’s biggest stars of the 90s and early 00s. After retirement, he coached Barcelona B and AS Roma before landing the Celta Vigo job. After a successful season with Celta, he was given the Barcelona post, where Moreno was also his assistant.

While coaching the club he used to captain, Luis Enrique won the treble in his first season. His subsequent seasons saw him adding to his trophy cabinet but failing to win the UEFA Champions League again. Upon leaving Barça, he became Spain’s coach after their FIFA World Cup exit in Russia. He came in after Fernando Hierro was summoned as a late replacement when Julen Lopetegui was sacked at the last minute before the tournament was set to start, for accepting the Real Madrid job without the Spanish federation’s consent.
