Griezmann release clause drops, Barcelona signing a matter of days

Multiple reports say that Griezmann will finally join Barça soon, although it’s not clear just when

Antoine Griezmann’s release clause has just dropped to 120 million euro, meaning Barcelona can sign the Atlético Madrid forward for that reduced fee at any point in this transfer window. Multiple reports say the Catalans will do exactly that, although estimates for when that will happen vary from a few days to a couple weeks.

Diario SPORT tells us that he will sign in the next two weeks if “nothing strange happens.” Mundo Deportivo says he will be announced around the 8th or 10th of the month. ESPN says that while the announcement is not imminent, Barça are already working on his signing and it should be done in a few days.

There were reports that Barcelona could pay slightly more than the release clause to get Atlético to agree to a fee paid in installments, but it doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. ESPN and Mundo Deportivo both say that Barcelona do not intend to pay a single euro more than the 120 million clause, with the latter adding that the fee could even be lower if the Catalans agree to ship off a player in exchange.

Nélson Semedo has been rumored to interest the colchoneros but MD tells us that he is “untouchable” as far as Barcelona are concerned, so he won’t be the one moving if a player is included in the deal at all.

If these rumors are true, that means the end of a long running transfer saga could be on the horizon. Griezmann famously was considered a near certainty by some to sign for Barcelona last year, until he broke his “gentleman’s agreement” with the club at the very last moment through a televised special.
