The next Barcelona match is upon us! The Blaugrana travel to the Basque Country and the always tough San Mamés for the first leg of the Copa del Rey quarter-finals against Athletic Bilbao. And coach Luis Enrique has picked his squad for the game.
The three expected absentees due to injury (Jordi Alba, Jérémy Mathieu) and suspension (Luis Suárez) are not in the list, but the major news is the confirmed absence of Lionel Messi. The Argentine will be rested for this Wednesday's match after the medical services advised the player and the coach not to risk any problems. Messi left the league game against Bilbao last Sunday with muscle pain, and while he's not injured, it was best to keep him out of tonight's match in order to avoid issues.
Claudio Bravo, who doesn't play Cup matches, is also out of the list, with Jordi Masip getting his usual backup duties in the Copa. A surprise presence is that of Douglas Pereira, selected to the squad for the first time since he suffered a foot injury several months ago.
These are the eighteen players named by Enrique for tonight's match:
Goalkeepers: 1. Marc-André ter Stegen, 25. Jordi Masip
Defenders: 2. Douglas Pereira, 3. Gerard Piqué, 6. Dani Alves, 14. Javier Mascherano, 15. Marc Bartra, 21. Adriano Correia, 23. Thomas Vermaelen
Midfielders: 4. Ivan Rakitic, 5. Sergio Busquets, 7. Arda Turan, 8. Andrés Iniesta, 20. Sergi Roberto
Forwards: 11. Neymar Jr., 17. Munir El-Haddadi, 19. Sandro Ramírez, 22. Aleix Vidal
Projected Starting Lineup (4-3-3):
Ter Stegen; Alves, Piqué, Vermaelen, Adriano; Busquets, Turan, Roberto; Vidal, Munir, Neymar
