4 talking points from Barça 3-0 Stuttgart

Memphis sets the tone and leads the way to victory

In a summer clouded with doubts and uncertainty, the Barcelona players stayed focused and put in another strong performance, defeating a short-handed Stuttgart 3-0 in Germany.

That’s three decisive wins in three preseason games.

The team is playing with the type of energy and purpose you’d expect from a group of players with nothing guaranteed.

Returning players like Sergi Roberto and Gerard Piqué have competition and are looking to prove they’re still the best men for the job.

Barça B players like Yusuf Demir and Nico González are desperate to take advantage of the scarce minutes, and perhaps the only opportunity they’ll have to force their way onto the first team roster.

New signing Memphis Depay is breaking down the cynicism of Barça fans, and giving hope that this time the star summer signing will do whatever it takes to exceed expectations.

That type of competitive spirit is contagious, and if it continues Barcelona will be feeling confident and ready to take on a new season.

Here’s a few things we learned from the first game in the trip to Germany.

Memphis is motivated and getting off to a fast start

VfB Stuttgart v FC Barcelona - Pre-Season Friendly Photo by Pedro Salado/Quality Sport Images/Getty Images

Memphis Depay is a man on a mission.

He’s wasted no time in proving to Ronald Koeman that he’s the man for the job in the final third.

In a way, he was was always going to have special privileges because of their relationship.

Perhaps exactly because of that perception, he’s set out to earn the opportunity beyond a shadow of a doubt on merit.

At this point, you can pencil him into the starting lineup against Real Sociedad on August 15th.

His highlight goal against Stuttgart encapsulates all the positive aspects of his first two appearances in a Barça shirt.

An assertive run behind the defensive line, a perfect first touch, composure in front of goal, and a powerful and confident finish.

Even more encouraging is the instant chemistry you’re seeing with Antoine Griezmann and Frenkie De Jong.

Memphis is showing he understands the Barça style of play, but he’s also not afraid to insert his unique personality onto the game.

So far he’s thunder and lightning, and worth the price of admission.

Riqui Puig believes in himself and will not give up

VfB Stuttgart v FC Barcelona - Pre-Season Friendly Photo by Pedro Salado/Quality Sport Images/Getty Images

Koeman has shown his hand.

In spite of saying he plans to give Riqui Puig more chances, it’s clear that the vendetta continues, and that he’ll look for any excuse not to play him.

This game started with Dutchman snubbing Riqui by giving the starting minutes to young Gavi instead.

That left Riqui with 30 minutes at the end of the game to do what he could with the scraps, and say “anything you can do, I can do better”.

Riqui came firing out of the gates with a point to prove, and there seemed to be a determination to get on the stats sheet.

Within five minutes of coming on, he had two shots on goal, and finally broke through on the counter attack with a tough near post finish.

This was a statement goal. His excitement was equal and opposite to Koeman’s likely disappointment.

Riqui won’t go away without a fight. It would be best for Koeman to recognize and reward his efforts for the good of the team, but given what we’ve seen I wouldn’t count on it.

Yusuf Demir is campaigning hard for a spot on the first team

VfB Stuttgart v FC Barcelona - Pre-Season Friendly Match Photo by Harry Langer/DeFodi Images via Getty Images

I’m starting to get the feeling that Yusuf Demir has one foot in the door at the Camp Nou.

He’s started every game this preseason, and has been impressive throughout.

Ronald Koeman wants to play with a 4-3-3, but the challenge has been finding the forwards that provide the right balance.

The combination of Memphis, Griezmann, and Demir was about as good as he could have hoped for.

It’s silly to compare anyone to Lionel Messi, but Demir does have the same profile that the young Argentinian had when making a name for himself on the right wing.

Demir is effective cutting in on his left, but he has shown an aptitude for stretching the game vertically too.

Against Stuttgart he earned his first goal in a Barça shirt, with a well timed run in front of goal, and a finish off a cross from Griezmann that started with an overlapping run and pass from Memphis.

Álex Collado, his main competitor, remained on the bench throughout.

Koeman seems to be making up his mind on the Austrian.

Gavi and Nico show the future is bright in the midfield

FBL-GER-FRIENDLY-STUTTGART-BARCELONA-health-pandemic-vaccines Photo by THOMAS KIENZLE/AFP /AFP via Getty Images

You can see why everyone loves Gavi.

He’s super active, covers lots of space, and looks like the prototypical Barcelona academy product.

To me, he’s very similar to Riqui Puig physically, positionally, and with his disposition in the midfield.

An encouraging sign in the game was the intensity and sense of urgency from the start, and Gavi was one of the main catalysts that set the tempo that allowed Barça to get out to an early 2-0 lead.

Like it or not, a battle is heating up between Gavi and Riqui.

Koeman sang the praises of Gavi this week, and signaled his approval by giving him the chance to start. My worry, however, is that he may be using Gavi as a prop to keep Riqui on the sidelines.

Gavi is only 16 years old, a bit raw, but clearly has a bright future. The way things are looking, that future may be now.

Combine that with the performance of Nico González in the holding role, and Barcelona should be excited about the talent coming through the midfield pipeline.

Very similar to Sergio Busquets, Nico looks smart and composed on the ball, and has also shown a natural ability to get after it defensively.

With many of the stars still away from the team, and the club desperately looking to make sales, this preseason has been full of intrigue as players know an opportunity of a lifetime is on the line.

The new team is coming into focus, and they’ll look to continue their winning streak in Austria against RB Salzburg on Wednesday.

Stuttgart 0-3 Barça: Recap

VfB Stuttgart v FC Barcelona - Pre-Season Friendly

Three good goals and another victory

Barcelona remain perfect in preseason thanks to a 3-0 win over Stuttgart at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Stuttgart. The Blaugrana had a slow start but picked up the pace midway through the first half, scored three good goals and earned a deserved victory to stay unbeaten in the exhibition season.

FIRST HALF

The first 20 minutes were a bit of a tough watch as Stuttgart settled into a defensive structure and Barça had trouble breaking down the German backline, and the passing was slow and unimaginative.

Except for Memphis and Gavi, who were active and bright throughout the half moving all over the pitch and providing options for their teammates. It was a smart run from Memphis that created the first goal, and after a beautiful long ball over the top by De Jong, Depay controlled the rock with a gorgeous first touch, flicked it over Stenzel and fired it home for an amazing opening goal.

Memphis was also a big part of the second goal, with a nice piece of skill to release Griezmann and the Frenchman gave Yusuf Demir a tap-in for his first Barça goal.

At halftime, Barça were deservedly ahead with a few bright individual performances and 25 good minutes from the whole team to finish the period.

SECOND HALF

The second half was pretty much played on auto-pilot as Barça dominated possession and didn’t get out of third gear, but Riqui Puig came on as a substitute with his usual energy and scored a nice goal on the counter-attack to make it 3-0.

Stuttgart had a few nice moments but never truly troubled the Barça defense, and the final whistle came to end another solid performance from the Blaugrana. They stay perfect with three straight wins in preseason, and face RB Salzburg next.

Barça’s third preseason match takes place in Germany

It’s time for Barcelona’s third preseason match! After a full week of training in glorious German weather, the Blaugrana will face high-level Bundesliga competition as they take on Stuttgart at the Mercedes-Benz Arena, home of Die Roten.

Barça are unbeaten so far in exhibition matches thanks to two solid wins against Gimnastic and Girona, and plenty of youngsters have impressed as they’ve been given a chance to play for Ronald Koeman’s team with the absence of several first team players still on vacation last week.

But most of the senior stars are back now, and the squad for the Germany trip looks strong and ready to go. Stuttgart had a wonderful year in their first season back to the Bundesliga in 2020-21 and will present a solid challenge to Barça today, and this should be a good one. Vamos!

Mingueza injured again as Spain advance to Tokyo 2020 semifinal

Egypt v Spain: Men’s Football - Olympics: Day -1

The Barcelona defender had a relapse of his thigh problem

Barcelona defender Oscar Mingueza was forced off with a thigh injury again as Spain defeated the Ivory Coast in extra-time to advance to the semifinal stage of the Tokyo 2020 football tournament.

Mingueza was injured in Spain’s opening match of the Olympics against Egypt and missed the following two group stage games. He was cleared by the medical staff to return for the Last Eight but had a relapse in the first 10 minutes and had to be substituted.

The La Liga season begins in two weeks, and Barça will be hoping that Mingueza’s injury isn’t serious and he will be available for the opening match against Real Sociedad.

Without Mingueza, the two other Barcelona players involved in the tournament for La Roja, Eric García and Pedri, took part in a thrilling 120-minute game that ended with a 5-2 win for Spain thanks to a hat-trick by Rafa Mir. Spain’s opponents in the semifinal will be Japan who defeated New Zealand on penalties in the other quarterfinal.

Agüero shows up four days earlier to start Barça career

The new striker is already at work

Barcelona’s new striker has already started work. Sergio Agüero cut his preseason short and began some individual work at the club’s training facility on Friday despite being scheduled to join training only next Monday.

It was a light individual session and Kun won’t meet his new teammates until they return from Germany next week, but the fact he showed up four days early to try and get in shape as quickly as possible shows his commitment to his new club.

Agüero earned a longer vacation after winning the Copa America with Argentina this summer, and he could be available for the Joan Gamper Trophy against Juventus next week for his first action with the Blaugrana.

What would success look like for Barcelona in 2021/22?

FC Barcelona training camp...
Photo by Philipp von Ditfurth/picture alliance via Getty Images

Koeman needs to find a winning formula again

The league season is only a couple of short weeks away, and with the final few squad members that are absent due back in the next few days, it’s worth asking the question as to what success will look like for Barcelona in the forthcoming campaign.

Taking into account the financial struggles that the current board have had to contend with right across the summer, perhaps just getting by without any more off pitch shenanigans would be considered a win.

Slowly but surely certain aspects appear to be coming together, though it’s clear that Joan Laporta and Co. are having to get very creative indeed.

The promotion of more La Masia graduates into the first-team squad would absolutely represent success of the model which the president prefers (even if they’ve not technically spent their entire time in the academy).

FC Barcelona v Girona FC - Friendly Match Photo by Pedro Salado/Quality Sport Images/Getty Images

Iñaki Pena and Álex Collado appear to be the next two to make the step up, and not before time it must be said.

Is it acceptable to still allow for a season of transition for want of a better phrase, in order to allow the youngsters to develop under Ronald Koeman?

To see homegrown players expressing themselves relatively free of pressure and finding their way at senior level as Barca look to play the long game.

Or can success for the first-team only really be defined by the winning of trophies?

To that end, was last season a success because the Copa del Rey was secured against all the odds, or was it a failure because the blaugranes blew the league at the death and were never a serious contender for the Champions League?

Leo Messi famously said that he would only re-sign with the club if they could promise him a ‘winning project,’ so that would suggest that he believes the team have it in them to go all the way in La Liga and in Europe.

FC Barcelona training camp... Photo by Philipp von Ditfurth/picture alliance via Getty Images

Maybe going deeper into the Champions League, where Barca haven’t been since they last won it in 2015, would be considered a success, if they’re not quite strong enough to win it.

An improvement over and above the last couple of seasons means things are moving in the right direction doesn’t it?

Clearly, there’ll be an awful lot of different and subjective opinions about what exactly can be looked back upon in years to come and pinpointed as ‘successful’ in 2021/22.

Personally, seeing more youth brought through from La Masia gives hope that the wheels are being oiled sufficiently well that in the future another ‘golden generation’ may represent the club.

What about you? What do you regard as success for Barcelona next season?

Koeman demands ‘much more’ from Barca players - report

FC Barcelona v Girona FC - Friendly Match

The Dutchman has also told his team to cut out mistakes

Ronald Koeman has urged his players to improve on last season and cut out mistakes ahead of the new La Liga campaign.

The squad is currently at a pre-season training camp in Germany where Koeman spoke to his players directly about the upcoming campaign.

“This year you have to give much more,” he said, according to Diario Sport. The Dutchman also reflected on last year and added, “we were killed by specific mistakes that we cannot repeat if we want to win titles.”

Koeman came under pressure at the end of last season as Barca’s title challenge fizzled out and the team ended the season behind Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid in the table.

President Joan Laporta eventually confirmed Koeman would stay in charge for a second year but another poor start to the season is likely to put the Dutchman in the spotlight once again.

Individual errrors, particularly in defense, were a recurring theme of last season’s campaign, while the team was also guilty of missing chances despite finishing as La Liga’s top scorers.

Barca have some tricky fixtures to negotiate in the early weeks of the campaign too. The Catalans play Real Sociedad, Athletic, Getafe, and Sevilla in their first four games of 2021-22.

Araujo: I learned a lot at Barca last season

The defender says he's matured

Barcelona center-back Ronald Araujo says he’s feeling good and looking forward to the new La Liga season with the Catalan giants.

The defender returned for pre-season earlier this week after taking a break following his Copa America campaign with Uruguay.

Araujo is now in Germany with the rest of the squad preparing for the new campaign and feels he is a more mature player now.

“I feel very well and very happy. We are happy because we are all together in a new preseason and to work well for what is to come,” he said.

“In my first season I learned a lot and I feel more experienced and more mature than last year. A few days of mental and physical rest are always good, I have been preparing a lot, especially from the injury I had last year.”

Source | Barca TV

The defender will be hoping he can nail down a regular place in the starting XI next season under Ronald Koeman. The Dutch coach has plenty of decisions to make regarding his backline, particularly with Eric Garcia having arrived on a free transfer.

Koeman turns down two potential Barca signings - report

FC Barcelona v Girona FC - Friendly Match
Photo by Jose Breton/Pics Action/NurPhoto via Getty Images

The Dutchman just wasn’t convinced

Barcelona’s Ronald Koeman was given the reigns to the club for the second time this offseason. He was given the old “vote of confidence” from Laporta after a tumultuous first season. As a part of that second vote of confidence, he was able to sign a few players he wanted such as Memphis Depay and Sergio Aguero.

He was also, reportedly able to say no. Sport reported that Koeman in fact said no to Cristian Romero and Renato Sanches.

Romero was seen as too much given the center-back depth Barcelona has. Specifically, Eric Garcia was the key back Koeman wanted, and he got him. Secondly, Sanches was simply seen as not being convincing enough to crack consistent playing time given the depth in the Barca midfield.

The game was due to take place at the Camp Nou

Barcelona’s Joan Gamper Trophy matches against Juventus on August 8 will no longer take place at the Camp Nou but have been switched to the Estadi Johan Cruyff instead.

The double header, with the men’s team and Barca Femeni both in action, was due to take place at the famous stadium with 19,869 supporters in attendance but plans have once again been disrupted due to Covid-19.

The Catalan government have now confirmed the games will now take place instead at the Estadi Johan Cruyff with 3,000 spectators allowed in to watch.

The game is Barcelona’s final pre-season friendly before the new La Liga season kicks off.

Ronald Koeman’s men begin the campaign with a home game against Real Sociedad on August 15 and then head to San Mames for a first away match versus Athletic.

Fans are still expected to return to the Camp Nou at the start of the season but numbers may be restricted.

Pjanic’s Juventus return ‘slows down’ - report

FC Barcelona v Girona FC - Friendly Match
Photo by Jose Breton/Pics Action/NurPhoto via Getty Images

But the deal remains on the table

Miralem Pjanic has been linked with a return to former club Juventus after just one season at Barcelona but a potential transfer has reportedly “slowed down.”

Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri hinted that the Turin giants were working on a move for the 31-year-old earlier this week at a press conference but there could still be some way to go.

Mundo Deportivo report that things have “slowed down” with regards a Pjanic move even though Allegri is keen to bring the midfielder back to Serie A.

Pjanic also wants to rejoin Juventus and the transfer is said to still be “on the table” but the problem seems to be how the Italian club will make it work.

A one or two-year loan move still seems to be the most likely option if a deal is to be completed, but it seems a final decision is yet to be taken by Juve.

Meanwhile, Pjanic has flown out to Germany with the rest of the Barcelona squad for pre-season friendlies against Stuttgart and Red Bull Salzburg.

Barca will then return for the Joan Gamper Trophy on August 8 which will see the Catalans come up against Juventus and the chance to possibly seal a deal for Pjanic.

Rey Manaj in no rush to decide Barca future - report

The forward has impressed in pre-season

Barcelona B striker Rey Manaj is reportedly in no rush to decide his future despite attracting interest after some impressive displays in pre-season with the first team.

The 24-year-old bagged a hat-trick against Nastic and then scored again in the victory over Girona as the Catalans kicked off pre-season with two wins.

Manaj’s performances have reportedly attracted interest from a number of clubs including Sassuolo, Cadiz and Famalicao.

There are offers on the table but Manaj is in no rush to make a decision as he’s enjoying himself with Ronald Koeman’s team, according to Mundo Deportivo.

Manaj is under no illusions that it will be difficult to convince Koeman and had expected to leave but is said to be “living the dream” right now.

The striker has been included in the squad that has flown out to Germany to play Stuttgart and RB Salzburg and will be hoping to continue his goalscoring streak.

It’s even thought that more goals for Manaj in pre-season could also see more attractive offers arrive for the forward which would suit Barca who are keen to cash in on the attacker.

Barcelona have now decided to take a “step back” from the situation and the feeling is there is an unwillingness to negotiate from Moriba and his representatives.

The report suggests that Barca are actually starting to lose patience with the situation, particularly as the team is now well into their pre-season preparations.

The squad flew out to Germany on Wednesday without Ilaix for games against Stuttgart and Red Bull Salzburg. As it stands, the youngster looks set to miss the entire pre-season with the first team which allows others the chance to impress Ronald Koeman.

There’s a similar report in Ara that claims Moriba currently earns €1m a year at Barca and his agents are hoping to triple his wages. Such a pay rise would see the 18-year-old on the same salary level as Pedri.

Barca are said to be unwilling to accept the demands as yet but are said to be open to shortening the renewal which would allow the club to review his salary “in a couple of years from now” when Moriba is an established member of the first-team squad.

Memphis confident he can play with Aguero and Messi

FC Barcelona v Girona FC - Friendly Match

There’s big competition for places in attack

Memphis Depay is the new star at Barcelona. The Dutchman arrived to a bit of fanfare given Barcelona’s otherwise depressing offseason.

He chatted a bit with the press this week about his short time at the club and specifically about pairing up with Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero.

“There are lots of attackers in the squad, but I think we all offer something different. My skills and strong points are different to those of Agüero, for example, or any other attacker. I think that the three of us all bring something different to the table and we would be able to play together, but let’s see what side the manager picks.”

There’s no question the trio will be a devastating attack. However, talent hasn’t been Barcelona’s biggest problem in the past, it’s been the parts working together. Hopefully, the three of them are able to work together efficiently.

Barcelona join Tottenham in Cristian Romero race - report

Brazil v Argentina: Final - Copa America Brazil 2021

The defender won Copa América with Lionel Messi and Sergio Agüero

FC Barcelona are reported to be joining the race to sign Atalanta defender Cristian Romero, according to the latest news from Italy.

They are attempting to sign one of the world’s best defenders in his age bracket, but it won’t be easy. Tottenham Hotspur are said to be one of the leading candidates to get the 23-year-old.

According to the rumors, the Catalans have presented their first offer to Atalanta and are “serious” about making a move. However, Barcelona’s wage bill problems are very well known. They will have to shed some high earners to afford Romero’s wage, but it seems it’s not impossible if they make the right moves.

Romero came through the youth ranks of Belgrano before joining Genoa in Serie A. Juventus were impressed and acquired him although loaned him right back to Genoa in 2019. He was then loaned to Atalanta with an option to buy in 2020. It was at Atalanta that he truly shined, earning the recognition of many as the best defender in Italy.

Atalanta have not officially used their purchase option from Juventus but it is widely expected that they will soon. Thus, clubs will have to negotiate with Atalanta in order to make the purchase.

Romero won the Copa América with Argentina alongside Lionel Messi and Sergio Agüero. He suffered through injuries that kept him out of most of the knockout stage games, except the final, which he played with painkillers. Argentina defeated Brazil 1-0 with a hard-earned clean sheet and a goal from Ángel Di María. Messi played the full 90 and Agüero was an unused substitute.

Puig is looking exactly like the former Arsenal and Manchester United striker

Robin van Persie has tweeted out his support for his “son” - Riqui Puig.

The official FC Barcelona account posted a picture of a smiling Puig. With his hair done a certain way and his face at a certain angle, he looked just like the former Arsenal and Manchester United striker.

Gerard Piqué thought so, so much so that he responded to the picture with a simple message: “Van Persie.”

The former Netherlands national team striker saw the picture and had to post his own message.

“Good luck this season son,” Van Persie wrote on his Twitter, followed by a few emojis.

So is Puig the long-lost son of Van Persie? Should he move to the forward line and try his hand as a striker? What are your thoughts on this funny image?

Sergino Dest turns down multiple big money offers - report

FC Barcelona v Girona FC - Friendly Match
Photo by Jose Breton/Pics Action/NurPhoto via Getty Images

The defender has plenty of admirers

Barcelona’s Sergiño Dest is becoming a bigger and bigger name in world football. The American full-back made his name with the national team and has shown he has the talent to hang with the best in the world at Barcelona.

The 20-year-old featured regularly in his first season with Barcelona after moving from Ajax in October and will be hoping to cement his spot in 2021-22. However, there will be increased competition for places with Emerson Royal having arrived.

Yet Dest has shown his commitment to the club in recent weeks by turning down offers of more money elsewhere in football. Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund, and Monaco have all reportedly made offers to Dest that would increase his salary significantly.

However, despite the allure of more money in his pocket, Dest has refused and appears to want to fight for more playing time at Barcelona. Gotta respect the desire out of him.

It’s hoped a contract announcement will be made soon

Lionel Messi arrived back in Barcelona on Wednesday after taking a break following a successful Copa America campaign with Argentina in Brazil.

The 34-year-old and his family have been enjoying a well-deserved vacation after a long season for club and country but are now back in Barcelona ahead of the new campaign.

Messi and his family were spotted arriving back at Barcelona’s El Prat airport by reporters.

According to reports, it’s only a short stop with Messi set to enjoy a few more days of holiday before getting back to work ahead of the 2021-22 campaign. Indeed, the Argentine is actually back in Barcelona on the day the squad flies out to Germany for a pre-season training camp.

Messi is not due to return to training until August 2, along with Sergio Aguero and Emerson Royal, and will not link up with the rest of his teammates until later in the week when they return.

The club captain is, of course, currently a free agent after his contract expired but there is hope a new deal will be announced shortly. Sport report that he will not return to training before he has signed a new deal but is expected to put pen to paper by August 2.

Barcelona staring transfer armageddon in the face

FC Barcelona v Borussia Dortmund: Group F - UEFA Champions League

What now?

With less than three weeks to go until the start of the new La Liga season, Barcelona really are staring at a transfer armageddon if the wheels don’t start turning on certain transfers sharpish.

There is a genuine chance that Lionel Messi will not be able to be re-registered by the club and that, above all else, would be the biggest indictment of Josep Maria Bartomeu’s presidency.

Covid will always be used as the excuse by the previous regime of course, but be in no doubt whatsoever that the mess that Barca currently find themselves in is as a result of their grotesque mismanagement.

In some respects, you can’t really blame the players for their stance. Put yourselves in their position.

If your boss offered you an almighty top up on your remuneration, don’t say you wouldn’t take it because we all would.

FC Barcelona v Girona FC - Friendly Match Photo by Pedro Salado/Quality Sport Images/Getty Images

Those players refusing to take a cut aren’t helping matters at present no, but they didn’t cause the problem.

The likes of Samuel Umtiti who just wants to hang around at all costs is another situation entirely.

He’s got little to no chance of ever becoming a regular at the club again, and his bloodymindedness in wanting to see out his contract speaks of a particularly poor attitude.

At least Miralem Pjanic appears to have seen the light and, if reports are accurate, wants to hot foot it back to Juventus as quickly as his size eights will carry him.

Maybe that will be the one deal which starts to oil the wheels and more will follow.

The two transfers that really need to come to fruition - in this window - look even further away from happening at this juncture.

Antoine Griezmann is being hawked around Europe’s big guns like a piece of meat. Unfortunately, there are no buyers at the cattle market and the Frenchman appears destined for at least another six months in blaugrana.

FC Barcelona v Girona FC - Friendly Match Photo by Pedro Salado/Quality Sport Images/Getty Images

The market for Coutinho has also gone quiet, and unless Joan Laporta and his board can get incredibly creative over the next couple of weeks, there’s every chance Barcelona start the season with no Messi, Depay, Garcia, Aguero and Emerson.

The club have long been a laughing stock and this has long since been a laughing matter.

Supporters can only sit back now and hope that somehow disaster can be averted at the 11th hour.

From the ashes of disaster grow the roses of success...

Allegri hints at Juventus move for Pjanic?

The boss has spoken about transfer targets

Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri appears to have hinted that the club is indeed working on a possible return for Barcelona midfielder Miralem Pjanic.

The 31-year-old has been linked with a return to Juventus after a difficult first year at Barcelona where he’s found game time hard to come by under Ronald Koeman.

Allegri spoke at a news conference on Tuesday on a range of topics, some of which have led reporters to believe he was discussing Pjanic.

“We have Cristiano [Ronaldo], who is great at shooting from distance, and Dybala, who is an excellent finisher closer to goal,” he said.

“One of these is right footed and the other is left footed. We might also sign another right-footed player who is good at free kicks...we’re working on it.”

The latest updates have suggested that Pjanic could take a pay-cut and join Juve on loan for a season with the option for a second. However, the Turin giants may have to offload Aaron Ramsey before a deal for Pjanic can be done.

Memphis happy to be a rebel like Luis Suarez

FC Barcelona v Girona FC - Friendly Match
Photo by Pedro Salado/Quality Sport Images/Getty Images

‘It can bring something extra and you win the game’

New Barcelona signing Memphis Depay has given a new interview with Diario Sport which will be published on Wednesday where he opens up a little bit on his personality.

The Netherlands international says he’s happy to be seen as a rebel and feels that having an extra edge can bring an advantage on the pitch.

Memphis also used former Barcelona striker Luis Suarez as an example of a player whose confrontational and ultra-competitive personality has helped him succeed.

“I don’t care if they say I’m a rebel. Sometimes, if you are a rebel on the pitch it can bring something extra and you win the game. Luis Suárez won so many games and scored so many goals, and not because he’s the sweetest, nicest person on the field,” he said.

“I feel good. For me it is a blessing to be here. The reception has been incredible. Obviously it is tiring to attend so many interviews and events, but I am doing it with energy and patience. I am enjoying this first week and my first match.”

The forward has made a bright start to his Barcelona career. Memphis made his debut as a substitute in Saturday’s friendly win over Girona and made it a memorable first outing for the Catalan giants by scoring his first goal for the club from the penalty spot.

La Liga cannot allow Messi to leave, says Getafe president

FC Barcelona v RC Celta - La Liga Santander

Angel Torres thinks it would be a massive mistake

Getafe president Angel Torres has been talking about Lionel Messi’s contract situation at Barcelona and says the club captain simply cannot be allowed to leave the Camp Nou and La Liga this summer.

The 34-year-old has been out of contract since his Barcelona deal expired at the end of June, although reports have claimed a new five-year deal has been agreed and is close to being announced.

Yet Barca must offload players or convince some high earners to take pay-cuts before being able to register Messi in order to comply with La Liga’s salary cap.

La Liga president Javier Tebas has made it clear he won’t “turn a blind eye” when it comes to Messi and that Barcelona must do things by the book. However, Torres thinks some flexibility should be allowed and that it would be a huge mistake if Messi were to leave.

“I have discussed it with Laporta and Tebas. LaLiga cannot allow Messi to leave this year. They would be making a mistake and we would all regret it. The best footballer in the world has to retire in Spain complying with the rules of economic control. I think LaLiga will be a bit flexible after the bad year in which Spanish football has lost 1,000 million due to Covid,” he said.

“And I will do whatever it takes so that footballers like Messi and Cristiano never leave because we are all harmed. Although it seems strange. Messi is for me the best footballer in the world and he must be in the best league in the world, which is La Liga.”

Source | Mundo Deportivo

Messi is currently on vacation after winning the Copa America with Argentina but is due back to Barcelona to start pre-season training on August 2. It’s thought the captain’s deal could finally be announced around that time.

Busquets & Alba set to join Barca training camp in Germany

The duo are set to start pre-season

Barcelona longtime duo Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba are set to finally join the Barcelona training camp this week. The Spanish duo has been taking a few weeks off since getting knocked out of Euro 2020 by Italy.

The club have already played two pre-season friendlies but are now due to jet off to Germany for friendlies against Bundesliga side Stuttgart and Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg.

Both Busquets and Alba are considered important to Barcelona but have also been rumored to have been asked to take pay cuts due to the club’s tricky financial situation. The difficulty in both cases is that their age has put Barcelona in the tough position of considering letting two players go who are the captain and vice-captain of Spain.

In all likelihood, both will be back for Barcelona this year. However, in order to make Lionel Messi official, Joan Laporta would probably sell off anyone in the world.

Aguero undergoes treatment to extend his career - report

FC Barcelona Sign Sergio Aguero
Photo by Pedro Salado/Quality Sport Images/Getty Images

The Argentine has had stem cell treatment

New Barcelona signing Sergio Aguero has reportedly undergoing treatment on his knees in a bid to try and help prolong his football career.

The 33-year-old has had stem cell treatment which is aimed at regenerating the cartilage to allow the Argentine to play longer, according to Cadena SER.

The report adds that the procedure was carried out by Dr. Robert Soler at the Institute for Tissue Regenerative Therapy and was planned before the striker’s move to Barcelona.

Sports stars such as Pau Gasol, Rafa Nadal, Carles Puyol, Martin Odegaard and Érik Lamela are mentioned as athletes who have also undergone this kind of treatment.

The treatment is not expected to mean any time out for Aguero who is expected to be able to train as normal. He is due back, along with Lionel Messi and Emerson Royal, on August 2 for pre-season.

Aguero missed large chunks of last season through injury with Manchester City and only managed seven Premier League starts for the Premier League champions.

The Argentine left the Citizens at the end of the season after his contract expired and has signed a deal with Barca that runs until the end of the 2022/23 season.

Ilias returns to training with Barcelona B

The 16-year-old was initially called up to join the first-team for pre-season

Barcelona’s 16-year-old midfielder lias Akhomach is back in training after testing positive for Covid-19 at the start of pre-season.

The club confirmed on Tuesday the teenager is back to work but has returned to Barcelona B after initially being called up to training with the first team.

Ilias is another of the club’s bright young talents and looked like he would get the opportunity to try and impress Ronald Koeman in pre-season. However, his positive test meant he missed the chance to train with the first team and the friendlies against Nastic and Girona.

Koeman has been able to use plenty of other youngsters in the games with players including Gavi, Yusuf Demir, Rey Manaj, and Nico Gonzalez all enjoying minutes in the two friendlies.

The Barca boss looks set to name a more experienced squad for the trip to Germany for friendlies against Stuttgart and RB Salzburg. Regulars such as Frenkie de Jong, Memphis Depay, and Antoine Griezmann all returned to training last week, while Ronald Araujo was back on Monday and Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba are due back in time for the trip.

Ilaix receives racist abuse amid Barca contract talks

Another shameful incident

Barcelona midfielder Ilaix Moriba has revealed he has received racist abuse online as he continues contract negotiations with the Catalan giants over a new deal.

The 18-year-old published a video on TikTok where he shows some of the messages he has received. Moriba shakes his head and adds the caption, “Seriously?”

Barca shared the video with a strong message of support for the midfielder.

Moriba is sadly not the first footballer to be targeted in this way. Most recently, England trio Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka suffered online abuse after missing penalties in the Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy. Five people were subsequently arrested following an investigation into the incident.

Moriba has been in talks with Barcelona over a new deal as his current contract expires next summer. According to reports, both parties are yet to come to an agreement and more talks are scheduled for later this week.

A report in Mundo Deportivo on Tuesday says there is “optimism” that a deal can be reached, and coach Ronald Koeman is hoping to be able to include the youngster in his squad that is due to fly out to Germany this week.

Griezmann willing to take pay cut to stay at Barcelona - report

FC Barcelona v Girona FC - Friendly Match
Photo by Jose Breton/Pics Action/NurPhoto via Getty Images

The Frenchman would only leave if it’s to return to Atletico

Antoine Griezmann’s future at Barcelona remains the subject of continued speculation amid rumors the France international could be sold this summer to free up space on the wage bill and allow the club to fund Lionel Messi’s new contract.

The latest update comes from Diario Sport who reiterate that Griezmann is only interested in leaving if it’s to return to Atletico Madrid but is willing to sit down and talk about a pay-cut which could see him stay at the Camp Nou.

The 30-year-old is apparently not interested in a move to the Premier League but would be happy to work again with Diego Simeone at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

However, the update also states that Griezmann’s “idea” is to stay at Barcelona and he hasn’t yet been presented with an option to leave. The Frenchman returned to training last week and played in Saturday’s friendly win over Girona.

It’s thought the club will talk to Griezmann about his future and the forward would have no problem in sitting down and talking about reducing his salary in a bid to help the club’s financial crisis.

It seems likely that Barca would also need a host of other players to also cut their salaries to make the numbers add up, meaning some big decisions need to be made and fairly quickly too with the start of the new La Liga season now less than three weeks away.

Juve attempting to offload Ramsey to sign Pjanić - report

FC Barcelona v Girona FC - Friendly Match
Photo by Pedro Salado/Quality Sport Images/Getty Images

The Italians are looking to move Ramsey back to the Premiership

Juventus are asking FC Barcelona for more time in order to open up space for Miralem Pjanić to return. According to the latest news, the Italians are first looking to offload Aaron Ramsey in order to afford the Bosnian.

Ramsey, a former Arsenal FC player, is said to have attracted the attention of Wolverhampton Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur. That would open up space in the wage bill for Pjanić, who is willing to take a paycut in order to make the move happen.

The transfer would be on loan with an option to buy, which would benefit Juve as it is said their manager, Max Allegri, has requested the player by name. Allegri is in his second stint in charge in Turin, and Pjanić could also come back to the bianconeri.

The midfielder reportedly has offers from AS Roma (a team for which he’s played for before) and Inter Milan, but his priority is to return to the club that turned him into a star.

Pjanić was acquired in a pseudo-swap deal that saw him arriving to Barcelona at the same time as Arthur was sold to Juventus, in a move widely believed to be primarily motivated as a way to balance the books.

He has failed to earn a starting spot in the eyes of manager Ronald Koeman.

Barcelona and Neymar amicably settle lawsuits

International Champions Cup 2017 - Real Madrid v FC Barcelona
Photo by Robbie Jay Barratt - AMA/Getty Images

The cases date back to the Brazilian’s time at the club

FC Barcelona has announced that it has amicably settled all lawsuits with former player Neymar, ending a years-long conflict.

“FC Barcelona announce that it has ended out of court in amicable fashion the various labour and civil litigation cases that were open with the Brazilian player Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior,” an official statement reads.

“As such, a transactional agreement between the Club and the player has been signed to end the legal cases that were pending between the two parties: three claims related to labour and a civil case.”

The lawsuits relate to wage and bonus disputes dating back to 2017, when the Brazilian left for Paris Saint-Germain in a record breaking transfer.

Most of the lawsuits concern a loyalty bonus that the club paid only in part. When he signed a new five-year contract in 2016, he was promised a 64.4 million euro bonus. However, Barcelona paid only 20.75 million of this bonus before Neymar left. The club insisted that he was not due any more payments since he had broken the contract. However, the player demanded the full amount.

Since then, the club has made several efforts to sign Neymar again. Every time, however, the deal never came to pass.
