Messi talks Barcelona titles, Mascherano’s future and how being a sub ‘sucks’

Lionel Messi has given an interesting interview to TyC Sports where he states he is far more interested in winning titles with Barcelona than adding another Ballon d’Or to his collection.

The Barca ace has already won the Golden Ball five titles but Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to claim the award this year, with the winner announced on Thursday.

Messi has been talking about the award but says success with Barcelona and Argentina are what he is now focused on.

"In truth, I am far more interested in team titles," he said.

"It was a beautiful feeling to win all that I have won, above all the first few times. Once that had happened I started to give even less priority to the individual prizes.

"I would love to keep achieving things with the guys, above all Champions League and Ligas, to win things with the national team as we got so close and it wasn't to be, that has always been my priority."

Messi also discussed Javier Mascherano’s future at the club, with the latest reports suggesting he wants to quit in January, and his team-mate understands his view.

“I understand that Mascherano wants to play more. He’s in his final year and he wants to play, not sit on the bench despite him sitting on the FC Barcelona bench,” he said.

“There is nothing more beautiful than playing and enjoying those matches. Mascherano sees now that he does not have that possibility here anymore.”

And Messi was also asked about he feels being a substitute, having been benched again for Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Sporting.

“I have learned that the season is long, that there are times which are harder than others because the years fly by and now my body pays the price for playing in so many matches,” he said.

“Being on the bench sucks. I realised that sometimes not playing is for the best. Being on the bench sucks because from the outside you see things more easily and you notice things you don’t when you’re playing.

“Sometimes you ask yourself ‘why didn’t he do that? It was easy.’ But on the pitch things aren’t as easy. I achieve records that I only find out about days later because people tell me about them.”
