Around La Liga: Top Four All Win, Girona in Top Half of the Table

The league title will be a four horse race, it seems

The top four all won, meaning they’ve separated themselves even further from the pack. If things continue as they are now, La Liga could be a four-horse race. We asked the question if Sevilla, tied for fourth on points before this round of fixtures, were top four contenders as well, or simply pretenders.

After fourth-placed Real Madrid smashed them 5-0 with relative ease, the answer seems clear. It’s all about the top four.

Third-placed Altético Madrid were... Atlético and scraped a 1-0 win. And in second place, Valencia were able to snatch a 2-1 victory over Celta Vigo thanks to a controversial penalty.

Barcelona, meanwhile, kept the top spot again with a 2-0 win over Villarreal. Worryingly for Villarreal, that's their third loss in a row and Getafe, Girona, and Leganés are just a point behind looking for that final European spot. Leganés are not in good form either though, having lost five of their last six. On the other hand, Girona and Getafe are looking stronger.

Getafe followed up a big win against Valencia with a 0-0 draw against Eibar, which is fair enough. But Girona might be stealing the headlines as the recently-promoted side are making a claim for being the second-biggest club in Catalonia with a 1-0 victory away to Espanyol.

Alavés got an important win this weekend, 2-0 over fellow relegation candidates Las Palmas. Las Palmas are now bottom, while Alavés are inching over to safety, but they’re still in the relegation zone.

The news might have been better for Alavés had Deportivo La Coruña, the team immediately in front of them, and Málaga, the team immediately behind them, not won their matches as well. The relegation battle could be tight. On the other hand, of their past 11 matches, Las Palmas have lost 9, drawn 1, and won 1.
