FC Barcelona has a question mark in the center of defense
With Samuel Umtiti out injured, Ernesto Valverde has an interesting choice to make ahead of FC Barcelona’s big test against Real Madrid. Javier Mascherano had been injured on international duty with Argentina, but he has been given the medical green light and was back on the bench for Barça’s 4-0 triumph over Deportivo La Coruña.
In his place, Thomas Vermaelen has played well, and maintained fitness. The Belgian had struggled with injuries ever since arriving at Barcelona, but he is gaining the confidence of the locker room.
Ordinarily, Mascherano is higher in the pecking order, but with Vermaelen being in form and the Argentine coming back from an injury, is it Vermaelen who will start el clásico?
