FIFA is not happy with the Spanish government’s involvement in the RFEF.
FIFA has threatened to leave Spain out of World Cup 2018 in Russia due to the "Villar case,” according to El País. The Spanish football federation has received a letter from FIFA in which they warn that the Spanish government's interference in the federation's business could lead to Spain being suspended as a member of FIFA, which would mean a total ban from all competitions, including the World Cup.
FIFA does not allow any government to interfere in the business of the country's football federation. The Spanish government's sports ministry allegedly played a key role in moving towards new elections to replace Ángel María Villar as president. Villar had already been convicted of embezzlement and corruption.
Acting president Juan Luis Larrea denied there were any threats and said Spain would be at the World Cup.
It would be a real shame if FC Barcelona players such as Andrés Iniesta, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and Gerard Piqué missed out on the World Cup over this mess.
