FC Barcelona News: 4 December 2016; Barcelona Let Late Lead Slip Away in El Clasico

FC Barcelona 1-1 Real Madrid: Cruel late blow | FC Barcelona
The first Clásico of the season produced a cruel finale for FC Barcelona, who were just moments away from closing the gap on Real Madrid to just three points, and in doing so inflict the first defeat of the season on the league leaders. But a Sergio Ramos header in the very last minute of regulation time ruined the moment for a Camp Nou that had seen its team recover from a sluggish first half to produce a vintage display after the break.

Luka Modric's first-half performance was a joy to behold, winning the midfield battle with Sergio Busquets and preventing Barcelona from making any form of beeline to Lionel Messi. He won the ball four times in the first 45 minutes, completing 97 per cent of his passes, and though his second-half showing was less impressive, particularly with Andres Iniesta's introduction, he still popped up with a superb assist in the final few minutes.

Andrés Iniesta’s return to action | FC Barcelona
One of the big positives from 1-1 draw against Real Madrid on Saturday at the Camp Nou was the reemergence of captain Andrés Iniesta after 41 days on the sidelines. The magical midfielder came on to replace Ivan Rakitic on 60 minutes with the score at 1-0, took the captain’s armband and put on a fine display.

Luis Suárez: We were better but these things can happen | FC Barcelona
Talking of Sergio Ramos’ late headed leveller, the Uruguayan, who had put Barça ahead earlier in the game, said: "When you don’t close the game by making it 2-0, this can happen. We must become strong at home; now what we must do is continue and see if Madrid can lose some points."

Luis Enrique: We deserved to win | FC Barcelona
FC Barcelona manager Luis Enrique praised his side’s second half performance which looked to have given the hosts a precious derby victory but was left disappointed at conceding a late equaliser. Luis Suárez’s header left the team just a few minutes away from the three points against Real Madrid but the fact that the Catalans could not grab a second proved costly, according to the manager, with Sergio Ramos coming up with the late goal.

Mosaic to remember before El Clásico | FC Barcelona
The Clásico between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid in Week 14 of La Liga began with a spectacular animated mosaic. The more than 90,000 fans at Camp Nou unveiled a mosaic that contained a depiction of ‘castellers’ (human towers) in which the words ‘Força Barça’ could be seen. Both areas behind the goals bore the yellow and red of the ‘Senyera’, the Catalan flag. Unlike other mosaics, the one against Real Madrid was unique in the sense that it was dynamic, moving from the bottom part of the stands to the top, echoing the building of a ‘castell’ (human tower).
