The New York City FC star was the league’s best player.
Former Barcelona striker David Villa has been crowned the most valuable player of the MLS. The 35-year-old New York City FC player scored 23 goals and six assists in 34 games, leading his team to the playoffs, where they were soundly defeated by Toronto FC.
Villa played for 3 years in Barcelona, winning La Liga twice, as well as the Supercopa de España, the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.
El Guaje, as he is known, will always be remembered in Barcelona for scoring a long-range, bending goal to seal Barcelona’s CL win, 3-1 over Manchester United.
He also memorably scored twice in Barcelona’s famous 5-0 win over Real Madrid.
There was also this beauty:
In addition to his success at the Camp Nou, Villa won La Liga in his last year in Spain, that time with Atlético Madrid. He also won a Copa del Rey each with Real Zaragoza and Valencia.
For the Spanish national team, Villa won the 2010 World Cup and the 2008 Euros. In the World Cup, Villa tied for the most goals of any player, winning the Silver Shoe, and in the Euros, Villa won the Golden Boot.
He is the first Spainiard to win the MLS MVP, and the first player from a New York club to do so as well.
