FC Barcelona, Shakhtar Donetsk closing in on deal for Darijo Srna - Report

New full-back!

FC Barcelona are very close to signing a new full-back.

The Catalan giants have had very good progress in their negotiations with Ukranian powerhouse Shakhtar Donetsk over the last week and are very close to agreeing a deal for the transfer of full-back Darijo Srna, sources told Barça Blaugranes. The two clubs had major differences in transfer fee, but the deal will be done for €4 million, sources say.

Srna has six months left in his contract and could sign with any club for free in the summer, but he wants to play for Barça in the Champions League and expressed that desire since the beginning of this season. There were some internal discussions among the Barça board about signing Srna last summer, but Luis Enrique asked for six months to see if the Sergi Roberto - Aleix Vidal combination would work. It hasn't, and Vidal especially continues to disappoint the coaching staff, and they want a full-back with talent, experience and leadership to help the team for the next 18 months, which is the duration of Srna's contract.

Everything is done between Barça and Srna, and the only problem was bringing down Shakhtar's initial asking price, of €10 million. Since the player only has six months left on his deal, there was no reason why any club would pay that much, so Barça spent almost the entire month of December negotiating a decrease in the price tag, sources say.

Finally, the clubs agreed on a €4 million fee plus performances bonuses that could make the final price reach €6.5 million, if Srna wins the Champions League and plays 50% of the games during his 18-month contract with the Blaugrana.

If everything goes according to plan, Barça hope to announce Srna's signing in the first day of the January transfer window, which would make him available for the first La Liga game in 2017.
