Reports say Barcelona are after two defenders.
Barcelona are in the market for a defender, if transfer rumors are to be believed - which is not always the case.
But in the interest of keeping you informed, here is the latest being reported around the world.
The first news comes from the Barcelona-based Mundo Deportivo. According to reporter Fernando Polo, Barcelona are still in the market for Paris Saint-Germain's Marquinhos.
Barcelona have been chasing Marquinhos for a while, but PSG has not budged. The Catalans did sign Samuel Umtiti in the meantime, but Umtiti is left-footed whereas the Brazilian is right-footed.
It’s possible that Marquinhos would be the long-term replacement for Javier Mascherano. It’s also true that this might be Jérémy Mathieu’s last season, so Barcelona will need a defender or two to strengthen the rotation. It doesn’t hurt that Marquinhos can play right-back either, and the situation at Barcelona is unclear in that position.
PSG's director of football, former Barcelona striker Patrick Kluivert, is pushing Marquinhos to extend his contract, according to reports on French radio. PSG apparently had already made an offer to extend his contract, which runs until 2019, last year, but Marquinhos did not accept. However, more money could be offered up to keep him at PSG and Barcelona at bay.
Despite all these rumors, it’s important to remember: the Barcelona-Marquinhos saga is a long one, but he remains at PSG.
Which brings us to a fresh name: Dayot Upamecano.
According to Austria’s Salzburger Nachrichten, the Red Bull Salzsburg defender interests Barcelona as well. The 18-year-old is a regular in France’s youth teams, and is an undisputed starter in the third-place Austrian club’s starting XI. The player was given his debut at RBS by Óscar García, a former Barcelona player and youth team coach.
Like Marquinhos, Upamecano is right-footed. He’s also been deployed as a defensive midfielder and could be an option at right-back.
The biggest obstacle for the transfer would be that Red Bull Leipzig, currently the first-place team in the German Bundesliga, are close to signing him.
Apparently though, Upamecano is a Barcelona fan and would prefer joining the Catalans if an offer comes through. It could surpass 2.5 million euros.
So what do you think? Is either rumor credible? And is either transfer a good idea in the first place?
