Barcelona can earn quite a bit of money plus start a return to form.
Barcelona are not in a good mood. The draw against Real Madrid was not disastrous, but it was delivered in a cruel way: via a last-minute equalizer. The league is far from lost, but it’s not at all in a good position.
That’s why the match against Borussia Mönchengladbach could serve as a tonic to a team that has been in poor form recently.
It’d be a small step, but a step nonetheless. Of course, important players will be rested, but this match should be seen as preparation and as a way to fine-tune things.
If you don’t know, Barcelona have already won their Champions League group, so the result is irrelevant in terms of their advancement.
As bad as the team has been lately, a 1-1 draw against Real Madrid, taken as a result in isolation, is not a terrible result. A truly awful team would not have managed it. (Contextually, it’s not a good result, of course.)
There are ways to turn it around and it has to start today, with much more room for error and to experiment.
There’s also an economic incentive: 1.5 million euro for winning the match. Not a ton within the context of the annual budget, but not exactly chump change either.
(There’s also the question of Lionel Messi’s scoring record and personal rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo. Personally, I’m not bothered by it, but people out there care.)
The biggest reason for this match though is about mood and analysis. Lifting the team in terms of their state of mind, and allowing the coaching staff to analyze and possibly experiment.
