FC Barcelona announce squad for UEFA Champions League match against Manchester City

20 players on the list, a few Barça B youngsters

The next Barcelona match is upon us! The Blaugrana travel to England for the second group stage game against Manchester City, and coach Luis Enrique has called up a squad of 20 players for the trip:

Goalkeepers: 1. Marc-André ter Stegen, 13. Jasper Cillessen, 25. Jordi Masip

Defenders: 14. Javier Mascherano, 19. Lucas Digne, 20. Sergi Roberto, 23. Samuel Umtiti, Nili Perdomo, Marlon Santos

Midfielders: 4. Ivan Rakitic, 5. Sergio Busquets, 6. Denis Suarez, 7. Arda Turan, 12. Rafinha Alcântara, 21. André Gomes, Carles Aleñá

Forwards: 9. Luis Suárez, 10. Lionel Messi, 11. Neymar Jr, 17. Paco Alcácer

Enrique usually calls up a bigger squad for European trips, which is nice from the coach to give some players the chance to be in England even though they won't play on Tuesday (two of the 20 will have to be cut to form the final squad), and once again he called up the same three Barça B stars he did against Granada over the weekend, which means Marlon, Nili and Aleñá will spend a Champions League night with the first team. Awesome.

Projected Starting Lineup (4-3-3, right-left):

Ter Stegen | Roberto, Mascherano, Umtiti, Digne | Rakitic, Busquets, Gomes | Messi, Suárez, Neymar

Rafinha breaks through wall with acrobatic goal

A win is a win. What should have been a sure win was, but not in the most convincing fashion.

This was a hard game to watch. Even for the most devoted fan, this game was anything but entertaining. Don’t get me wrong! It is extremely enjoyable to watch good defense, great possession, and solid pressure. And when your team gets three points out of a La Liga match to keep pace with the teams at the top, it is hugely enjoyable. But this game just didn’t have any offensive spark. Despite how this paragraph may read, that doesn’t upset me. Yes, it would be incredible to see Messi, Neymar, and Suárez go off in every game and score a billion goals, but I understand when sometimes that’s not necessary. A win is a win, and without any needles exertion, we can now look forward to the difficult games that are coming.

This game was also important in that it provided the youngsters and new acquisitions with another opportunity to show what they’re made off, and to keep growing and developing in a less stressful environment. While Umtiti might look as if he could play every game and keep looking as calm and efficient as he’s looked thus far, some of his teammates still need to polish some of their attributes. That being said, let’s look at the players that shined more than others in this game.

I give you this match’s Three Gamboling Goleadores!

1st Goleador: Rafinha

Another goal! Scratch that. Another beautiful goal! In the space of a couple of seconds I celebrated twice, thought Messi was going to score, no wait Suárez, no wait Rafinha, NEYMAAAA…no, not him, he hit the post and now they’re going to clear the ba—RAFINHAAAA! This goal completely makes up for the utter lack of excitement we had to endure in the rest of the game.

2nd Goleador: Neymar

The young Brazilian had another terrific game. Possibly the most involved member of the attacking trio, Neymar was capable in both defense and offense, a stipend of successful and popular Barcelona players. In a game where there wasn’t much offense to speak off, it is hard to write he had three key passes with a straight face, so let’s all agree he had a good game so I don’t have to keep writing unimpressive statistics. *gasp* He had four accurate crosses!

3rd Goleador: Samuel Umtiti

Rock solid. This man needs a nickname. Most creative nickname gets a shout-out in the next Goleadores. Aren’t I gracious what with all the mind-blowing rewards. And, so that it isn’t as subjective as just me choosing the one I enjoy the most, rec your favorite comment to see which one is the most popular.

That is it for today! Visca Barça!

UEFA Champions League: Manchester City vs FC Barcelona: Match Preview

A look ahead to tomorrow's UCL rematch

FC Barcelona will be hoping to secure their place in the UEFA Champions League knockout stages tomorrow, when they travel to the north of England to take on Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. For Manchester City and for Pep Guardiola, this match represents something close to a must-win encounter; Guardiola’s coaching methods and philosophy are under intense scrutiny given City’s recent struggles, and another heavy defeat could have far-reaching consequences for the former Blaugrana coach.

Whatever your opinion on Pep might be since he left the club, I think that we as Culés can sympathise with him as a person, and as a coach. Having raised the bar so spectacularly high by inspiring Barça to a period of unprecedented dominance, it’s perhaps unfair for the media and fans alike to expect him to mastermind similar achievements everywhere he goes and then lambast him for failing to surpass their expectations.

In that sense, there are many parallels between Pep Guardiola and Lionel Messi; in Catalunya, both are revered as footballing deities – and rightly so – for their era-defining contributions to FC Barcelona. Outside of Catalunya, both are highly respected and often held in just as high a regard by the general public – but they are both dogged by a group of vocal dissidents, critics who will never be satisfied with their accomplishments and seem to celebrate even their most minor shortcomings.

I’ve explored this topic in a bit more detail before, but when Lionel Messi failed to secure the Copa America title this summer, he was immediately found to be personally accountable – even though he had produced some of the most superlative performances of his career to inspire Argentina to the final. He might have been involved in nine goals in 253 minutes of play prior to that final, but because he didn’t single-handedly deliver the title on the night – he had failed.

The vocal minority considered this to be validation – that Messi guy, yeah he’s quite good but I don’t really see what all the fuss is about considering how many times he’s failed to win with Argentina. How can he be the best player of all time if he can’t score penalties?

I’ve mentioned it before, but in this modern world the greatest tragedy is that the fans and media who surround the beautiful game are all too indisposed to acknowledge context and the role that it should have in our armchair analysis. Perhaps I’m being too kind with that assessment, maybe the greatest tragedy is that, in general, the average fan or typical member of the media is simply too ignorant to acknowledge context.

Therein lies the greatest similarity between Messi and Guardiola; with the average layperson unwilling or unable to provide context, they are both bound by the outside world to the standards that only they have previously achieved.

And with this in mind, let’s shift our attentions back to Pep Guardiola. Fortunately enough, his City side were able to halt their run of six matches without a win this past weekend by decimating Tony Pulis and West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns on Saturday afternoon – but the 4-0 win did little to turn the tide of public opinion back in his favour. While Manchester City might be sitting pretty atop the Premier League, the general consensus remains that Guardiola has not delivered the revolution that was promised.

This in turn has only lead to some reductive comments, some of which were made by intelligent football minds who should know better. We’ve all heard the generic and baseless comments about the downturn in form being attributable to the unrelenting and unforgiving quality of the Premier League; essentially, we’re one step away from people deducing that this is all because Guardiola couldn’t hack it on a cold night in Stoke – that’s the real reason why he was successful in Barcelona, right?

Never mind that he is just 17 matches into a three-year contract; because the past and the future be damned, football apparently is all about the here and now. You can count on one hand the number of times that Manchester City have topped the table through the first ten matches of the season, but as Guardiola hasn’t accomplished that with, what, a 100% record, the criticism comes rolling in from all angles.

A six-game streak without a win is concerning, of course – but there was no reason to suggest that some reactionary overhaul was required. Just as the next six games will not prove to be the be all and end all of Guardiola’s reign, neither will those six. Even within that streak, City’s emphatic defeat to Barcelona has been robbed of context. Not only were City equal to Barcelona for much of that match, but they were never expected to win in the first place.

Few teams visit the Camp Nou and secure favourable results – sometimes, the very best teams in the world leave not only empty-handed, but on the wrong end of a thrashing. In the context of City’s history, never mind that their mere presence at the Camp Nou represents an incredible upgrade from plying their trade in the third tier of English football less than 20 years ago, losing to Barcelona has been a relatively normal occurrence for them.

Five played, five defeats – and so just as Manchester City end one six match winless streak, another threatens to replace it. I can sympathise with Guardiola and his general plight, but tomorrow he’s not a former Barcelona coach, nor is he a neutral coach that I admire – he is the enemy, the opposition, and while another defeat would hurt his credibility, that isn’t any of our concern. We have our own critics to silence, and plus, you don’t want me to travel all the way up to Manchester tomorrow to be disappointed, right?

TEAM NEWS

BARCELONA

Last time this fixture rolled around, there wasn’t really any team news to discuss and so I delved into a few of the concepts that I thought would prove decisive on the night. As suspected, the battle for possession was nothing but a distraction – the key to the game was space, and how Barcelona exploited it when Manchester City made a mistake.

Even though City pressed high up the field and stopped the Blaugrana from dictating the tempo, they couldn’t take advantage. Even though Marc-Andre ter Stegen had more touches of the ball than Sergio Busquets, Ivan Rakitic and Andres Iniesta, City found ways to gift Barcelona the chances they were otherwise unable to create. We’ve talked about it at great length before; you can analyse a game to death, and pick out however many “keys to victory” as you like – but if Lionel Messi decides to transcend the tactics and transcend those battles, it doesn’t matter what happens in the rest of the game.

On the night, Messi himself only had one more touch than ter Stegen, which is far from ideal from Luis Enrique’s perspective – but it’s what he did with those touches that counts. When Fernandinho slipped, Messi rounded Claudio Bravo to score the game’s opening goal. When John Stones and the rest of the City defense afforded him a couple of feet of space on the edge of the area, he rifled home the game’s second goal.

When Ilkay Gundogan’s errant pass found Luis Suarez, Messi burst into space to ensure he was on hand to tap in the game’s third goal – he subsequently won a penalty and can also be credited with an assist for Neymar’s goal, the final goal of the evening. This was another masterclass and by the end of the evening it would have been naïve to state that Guardiola cost City the match. It would even be naïve to state that Barcelona outclassed Manchester City, because truthfully, they didn’t.

The most succinct summary we could provide of that match would simply be: Lionel Messi – and it’s those two words alone that provide us with all we really need to know.

Of course, the benefit for Luis Enrique coaching FC Barcelona is that he has Lionel Messi at his disposal for pretty much every match – and so, while he will still create a gameplan and analyse the opposition ahead of each match, he also has that get out of jail free card. Tomorrow evening at the Etihad, there’s a very distinct possibility that we could lose every single one of the battles that we should ideally win.

City could have more possession. City will almost certainly press as high up the field as they did last time out – and as such, they could win the territorial battle too. They could stop us from playing our usual style and all of this could prove disastrous; or Messi might render it all irrelevant. Maybe it won’t be him; maybe it will be Luis Suarez or Neymar this time – that’s Luis Enrique’s Barcelona in a nutshell.

We’ve admitted that we cannot dominate every match in the way that we often did under Guardiola. We don’t have the same personnel to play that way – nor do players like them exist in the realm of the footballing world anymore – and while we try our best to continue with that same ethos, we’ve tweaked our style to account for the times when we can’t quite scale those heights.

If I were Enrique, I would have spent the last few training sessions preaching the importance of movement and the idea of providing support to the man in possession. At the Camp Nou, we were all too willing to pass the ball back to ter Stegen in a bid to avoid the pressure – and then we promptly conceded it when the pressure continued and ter Stegen was left with no choice but to boot the ball out of play, or fire the ball forwards to an aerial challenge we would invariably lose.

The pressure from City will remain constant – and with Sergio Aguero likely to lead the line, it will become all the more dangerous. We can’t immediately teach our players to be more composed and not to err, not to hesitate in the face of pressure – but we can teach our players to move and remember that they can create options for the player in possession. This might mean dropping a little deeper at times, but if we can work around the pressure instead of concede to it, then we will stand a better chance of creating chances and securing victory.

Conceptually, this might sound difficult to grasp, but in essence we should be treating the match like a rondo. In the face of pressure in a rondo, there is no option to go outside of the circle and play the ball to a goalkeeper – instead, the players in the circle have to move, create angles and passing lanes – and at that stage, the pressure ceases to impact your game.

At the Camp Nou, our players were a little too static for my liking when the ball was in our half, and improving that would certainly make me a little happier.

This will of course be difficult without Andres Iniesta, without Jordi Alba and without Gerard Pique. These are three players that embody the Barça style, and their replacements will not be able to provide in the same way that they provide – but I have faith in our squad to deliver without them.

To briefly summarise the team news, Jeremy Mathieu also misses out with a double whammy of an injury and a suspension – but otherwise we don’t have much else to worry about. Expect the “Gala XI”, with Rafinha in place of Iniesta, and the French connection of Samuel Umtiti and Lucas Digne in place of Pique and Alba respectively.

MANCHESTER CITY

With Guardiola’s every comment and decision under fierce scrutiny in the English press, it perhaps isn’t being reported enough that tomorrow’s hosts are dealing with a few injury issues of their own. Pablo Zabaleta and Bakary Sagna have been fighting it out for the right-back slot all season long, and while neither have been particularly outstanding, it comes as a huge loss for City that they could be without them both for tomorrow’s match.

Unless Guardiola is feeling adventurous and would like to try his hand at a back three, it means that he will be forced to either hand a Champions League group stage debut to the inexperienced Pablo Maffeo, or play another player out of position. The likely candidate would be Fernando, who filled in at the weekend – but neither option seems like a good idea up against Neymar.

As a Catalan kid who grew up in the Espanyol youth system, Maffeo would like nothing more than to start against the Blaugrana, but I suspect Pep might have an ace up his sleeve – Jesus Navas, who perhaps provides the pace and experience that Guardiola is likely to value against a player like Neymar.

Of course Pablo Zabaleta may still recover in time to start – but it’s one to keep an eye on ahead of kick-off.

Elsewhere, one suspects that Pep will opt for a similar line-up to the Camp Nou – with the only change likely to come as Kevin de Bruyne drops into his usual midfield role, while Sergio Aguero moves into attack at the expense of Nolito or Ilkay Gundogan who drop to the bench. With Claudio Bravo suspended, Willy Caballero will start in goal and Barcelona fans will know what to expect from him given his successful stint with Malaga.

His shot-stopping ability is not in question, but the combination of an inexperienced or unfit right-back, coupled with a goalkeeper who isn’t as comfortable in possession – we should try to replicate City’s approach from a fortnight ago, as chances are that it will pay dividends.

UEFA assign referee for Champions League match between Manchester City and Barcelona

Very good referee. Very good.

We have a whistle blower for the next Barcelona match, and it's a good one.

UEFA announced the list of referees and assistants assigned to the Champions League matches taking place this week, and Viktor Kassai from Hungary has been appointed as the official for Tuesday's match between Manchester City and Barcelona at the Etihad. This will be Kassai's second Champions League assignment this season (PSG 1-1 Arsenal, group stage).

Kassai is without a doubt one of the best referees on Earth today. Although he's a little bit of a fan of bookings (4.56 cards per game), he rarely makes wrong decisions, knows how to conduct a match in the disciplinary side and is usually fair with his card distribution.

The 41-year-old has officiated Barça two matches before. The most famous game was the 2011 Champions League Final, when Pep Guardiola's Barcelona beat Manchester United at Wembley Stadium to win the fourth European Cup in club history. Kassai also refereed a humiliating 4-0 loss Barça suffered at hands of Bayern Munich in the 2013 semifinal. The only time Kassai was the official in a Man City was also in a loss to Bayern Munich, in the group stage of the 2011/12 season.

So this is a great referee for what promises to be a great game. Perfect.

How should Barcelona line up on Tuesday's Champions League match against Manchester City?

Let's choose the starters!

Barcelona travel to England on Tuesday for a giant UEFA Champions League match away from home against Manchester City, looking for a fifth straight victory in all competitions. A draw is enough to secure the Blaugrana a place in the knockout stages of the European Cup, but Barça want to win every game and it's no different here.

Luis Enrique continues to deal with an injury crisis, although he has one good news ahead of the City trip: Arda Turan is now recovered from an ankle injury and will be available for selection. Five players are still injured, though, and they didn't make the squad. Four of them will return to action after the international break, which is great news ahead of a tough schedule until the end of 2016.

Big matches scream GALA XI!, and even though two members of the Gala XI are injured, we are likely to see the other nine pieces of that lineup against City. Luis Enrique likes to go safe in big games, and we should see that reflected in the starting group for Tuesday. But what would your selection be? Do you want the Gala XI? Please fill out the attached form with the formation and eleven players you would like to see on Tuesday. Remeber: it's not what you think Lucho will do, it's what you want on the pitch.

Choose wisely.

La Liga: FC Barcelona 1-0 Granada CF: Match Review

A recap of the win that moved the Blaugrana into second place

FC Barcelona were forced to dig deep for a victory over struggling Granada CF on Saturday evening at the Camp Nou, as La Liga’s bottom side frustrated the reigning champions on what proved to be a tough night’s work for the Blaugrana. After a goalless first half, Rafinha’s spectacular chilena looked set to send Barça on their way to another comprehensive victory, but Granada continued to defend well and despite dominating possession, Luis Enrique’s side couldn’t create any more goals before the final whistle.

The victory moves Barcelona ahead of Sevilla, who dropped points earlier in the afternoon against Sporting Gijon, and ensures that they remain just two points behind league leaders, Real Madrid, who came from behind to defeat Alaves 2-1 in the Basque Country.

***

The good news prior to kick-off was that Luis Enrique could call upon the services of in-form Rafinha-Alcantara, as it was feared that the Brazilian may miss out through injury. While his best work thus far this season has come on the right-hand side of a four-man midfield, it appeared as though Rafinha would start today in the usual 4-3-3 – alongside Ivan Rakitic, who started at pivote, and Denis Suarez. Sergio Busquets dropped to the bench, presumably as Lucho kept one eye on the week ahead, while the fabled trident of Messi, Suarez and Neymar all started.

Would they be able to heap more misery on Granada, or would Lucas Alcarez be able to mastermind a shock result for the side rooted to the bottom of the table?

From the outset, it was clear that Alcarez was looking to frustrate the hosts – a five-man backline was shielded by a four-man midfield who dropped deep and stayed compact in a bid to congest the centre and stop Messi, Neymar and Suarez from wreaking their usual havoc. Isaac Cuenca was deployed as a makeshift right-back, which in turn created a unique sub-plot as the former Barça winger would be tasked with stopping Neymar.

In fairness to the visitors, their approach worked perfectly through the first quarter of the match. Barcelona were dominating possession, winning the territorial battle and coming close to creating chances – but that was all. For all the brief glimpses of the usual Barça magic, the hosts had to wait until the 27th minute to force their first save from Granada’s Mexican shot-stopper, Guilllermo Ochoa, courtesy of a straight-forward header from Samuel Umtiti.

Perhaps it was because Granada were defending in numbers and with discipline; or perhaps Barcelona were not playing to their usual tempo. Maybe Lionel Messi was dropping too deep and maybe his positioning was to the detriment of the team. Whatever it was, the Camp Nou was getting somewhat anxious. After all, this wasn’t supposed to be a tough match, was it?

On the plus side, it took Atletico Madrid 34 minutes to score their first against Granada earlier this season – and they ended up notching seven before the night was over. This was always going to be about demonstrating patience – the only missing piece was whether Barcelona could find the right balance between patience, and urgency.

Luis Suarez was struggling to do so; played through on goal by an excellent pass, the Uruguayan only had Ochoa to beat, but he uncharacteristically hesitated. This did not look like the same man who presented the Golden Boot to the crowd before kick-off; as he paused, Granada recovered and Suarez never even got a chance to pull the trigger and force a save from Ochoa. A chance went begging, and as time passed, Alcarez’ tactics were looking more and more astute.

Aside from one sprawling save made to deny a speculative effort from Luis Suarez, Ochoa and Granada went through the first half broadly unchallenged. Barcelona were out of sorts – and Luis Enrique entered the half-time break with work to do.

….

Whatever was said at half-time, it didn’t take long for Barcelona to improve; within mere minutes of the restart the deadlock was finally broken – and in quite spectacular fashion. A trademark driving run from Lionel Messi had the Granada defense on the back-foot, and as he played a one-two with Luis Suarez, Messi stabbed a ball to the far side where Rafinha passed up the original opportunity to play an extra pass to Neymar – who, with an open goal at his mercy, looked set to score the game’s opening goal.

His rather nonchalant finish struck the post and as Granada scrambled to clear the ball, it broke free for Rafinha to attempt and convert a sensational chilena. The overhead kick flew into the top corner of the net and Rafinha wheeled away to celebrate his fifth goal of the season.

Having finally broken the deadlock, it was supposed to be a case of the floodgates opening and Granada’s defense capitulating, but if anything the opposite was true. Granada continued to defend resolutely and Barcelona continued to be frustrated. It took another quarter of an hour before Enrique’s side could create their next goalscoring opportunity as a fine pass from Sergi Roberto found Neymar alone in the Granada area – but his fierce shot was parried over the bar by Ochoa to keep the game close.

With over an hour played, Enrique was yet to make his first change of the evening and it wasn’t until the 70th minute that he looked to his bench and brought on Andre Gomes in place of Denis Suarez. Evidently, the current injury crisis had taken its toll on the Barcelona squad and Enrique wasn’t comfortable with the majority of the options he had at his disposal in what was proving to be a very tight game.

Paco Alcacer was the next to enter, replacing Luis Suarez after the Uruguayan spurned yet another fantastic opportunity by heading straight at Ochoa after yet another sublime cross from Sergi Roberto. Less than ten minutes were on the clock now, and it was somewhat fortuitous that Barcelona already had the lead – because they did not look like they were going to score another, and it appeared as though Barcelona were headed for their first 1-0 home win since August 2015, and our first home game of last season against Malaga.

Some late drama threatened that, as Lionel Messi was skied a one-on-one chance with time winding down – perhaps providing the most succinct summary of the game. Barcelona were clearly the better side, but they struggled to show it with any consistency. In the end, all that mattered was that they could string together one moment of magic – a moment of clarity in a foggy performance – and in the end, anything else wouldn’t have made much of an impact anyway.

Three points is three points – and Barcelona title challenge remains on track. Next up, Barcelona travel to the north of England, where they will square off against Pep Guardiola and Manchester City for the second time in a fortnight.

Until then, Visca el Barça!

WATCH: Rafinha’s acrobatic finish finally gives Barcelona lead vs. Granada

Whoa...

It’s taken Barcelona 48 minutes to find the breakthrough vs. Granada, but it was worth the wait. Rafinha has given Barcelona the lead with an audacious finish in front of goal off a broken play.

Neymar’s initial shot hit off the post, but the rebound popped up in a good spot for Rafinha overhead kick in for the game’s first goal. What a spectacular finish for a game that was crying out for a goal.

Granada have sat back the whole match so far hoping to keep Barcelona out of the net. This should change up their plans a bit and hopefully open up play a little more for more goals to follow.

Barcelona vs Granada, 2016 La Liga: Final Score 1-0 as Barça dominate at home

WINNER WINNER EASY VICTORY DINNER

Barcelona have now won three consecutive La Liga games after a comfortable 1-0 win over Granada at Camp Nou, thanks to a goal from Rafinha Alcântara. The Blaugrana were dominant from start to finish against a parked bus from the worst team in Spain, and found the winner in the second half to pick up an important victory and move to second place in the league table.

FIRST HALF

From the very start the story of the game was set: Granada would park a bus and Barça would have to find a way to score against it. But the Catalans were too stagnant with the ball and there was very little movement from the players without it, so the ball would just go from side to side without any type of penetration. The only real chance was a header from Samuel Umtiti after a corner-kick, and that was it.

At halftime, dominance of possession but nothing else. Not according to plan.

SECOND HALF

Barça needed an early goal to calm things down and be more comfortable in the second half, and that's what happened. A beautifully worked team play ended with Neymar hitting the post, but the ball came to Rafinha who volleyed home the opener.

The goal didn't exactly spark Barça into a brilliant performance or even more goals, but the Blaugrana controlled the rest of the game and didn't allow Granada to have any chances.

In the end, three points and a boost of confidence ahead of the visit to Manchester City in three days. Well done, boys!

André Gomes has a chance to make his mark in Iniesta’s absence -- but needs to step up

Guest article written by Mia O'Neill, who will be officially joining the Barca Blaugranes staff soon.

With Andres Iniesta ruled out for 6-8 weeks after suffering a knee injury last week in Barca’s 3-2 win at Valencia, Luis Enrique will have to look to his bench as he seeks a short-term replacement for the legendary midfielder. The Blaugrana face some important games in the coming weeks, including a trip to the Ethiad for a rematch against Manchester City on Nov. 1, a league match against second-place Sevilla five days later, and of course the looming Clasico on Dec. 3.

With that in mind, Barca need players to step up and bring some control and spark to the midfield in Iniesta’s absence -- particularly as they can’t afford to drop more points in the league between now and the Clasico. With El Ilusionista out, Lucho’s men will enter November missing not only their captain and longtime source of inspiration, but one of the few bright spots to what has been a surprisingly inconsistent and at times uncomfortable-looking midfield so far this season.

The ever-dependable Sergio Busquets has looked uncharacteristically fatigued and error-prone at times recently, and with little depth in the holding position, an Iniesta-less midfield will likely need someone else to provide control, as well as creativity, from further up the pitch. While no one in the short term will be able to replace all that Barca’s No. 8 has to offer, Enrique does have a number of solid backup options -- including summer signing and Euro champion André Gomes, who, despite having had some ups and downs in the early goings, possesses intriguing potential with his playmaking abilities and creativity on the ball.

With Arda Turan out for this weekend and Rafinha returning from injury -- Turan hurt his ankle in Barca’s midweek loss to Espanyol in the Catalan Super Cup, while Rafinha just finished rehab from a rib injury -- it’s likely that either Gomes or fellow summer signing Denis Suarez will see significant field time against Granada. And, as Lucho has opted more often recently to use the latter as a late-stage impact sub, it’s not unlikely that Gomes will start, or at least see considerable minutes.

Enrique has shown ample faith in Gomes since the 23-year-old Benfica product signed with Barca this summer. Gomes has appeared in five league games, starting three, and has made two Champions League appearances. A natural attacking midfielder who was a standout last season at Valencia -- Barca notably beat out Real Madrid this summer to sign him -- Gomes can attack with purpose, while also offering control and creative passing. When at his best, he offers composure beyond his years, which the Barca midfield could really use with Iniesta gone. (And which would require Messi to drop into the midfield less often, which according to Graham Hunter at ESPN, poses potential positional problems and defensive vulnerabilities.)

But despite notable gifts and a promising start to the season, Gomes has struggled recently. He had a game to forget against his old club, Valencia, last weekend, and looked questionable at times in his positioning and speed of play during this week’s match against Espanyol, according to Sport. Questions remain as to Gomes’ long-term reliability, and to whether he can be a consistent performer for Barca at this point in his career.

Some of his missteps, however, can be attributed to youth, and to adjusting to a new system. The Valencia game, in particular, was a chippy affair overall, and traveling to the Mestalla is always difficult, particularly when you’re facing off as a visitor against your old team.

Gomes has also had some bright spots since his arrival. He had a solid showing in Barca’s 7-0 Champions League win over Celtic back in September, in which he started and played 90 minutes, and has looked good in some of his cameo appearances in the league. He’s also continued to be an important player at international level for Portugal, following up a successful Euro -- in which he started for matches and helped his team to the title -- with an assist to Cristiano Ronaldo in a recent 6-0 World Cup Qualifying win over Andorra.

Given his young age and the fact that he’s still new to the Barca system, it’s natural that Gomes should have some growing pains as he continues to adjust to his new team. Even Iniesta took a while to nail down a regular spot in the Barca first team after coming up from La Masia. And with his talents and style of play, Gomes deserves a chance to prove that he can be an impact player, both for the current side and down the road as he continues to mature. These next few weeks could well be the opportunity to do just that.

Barcelona vs Granada, 2016 live stream: Game time, TV channels, and how to watch La Liga online

Can Barça win a third league game in a row?

Barcelona will look to win a third consecutive La Liga match this Saturday when they take on Granada at Camp Nou, and a win is vital for the Catalan giants to stay close to leaders Real Madrid in the early stages of this title race.

This is how the Spanish league works: every point matters and whenever you drop those, you're in trouble. Barça dropped plenty of points at the start of the season but trail Madrid by just two; they can't afford to see that gap increase, however, and a victory this weekend will assure they remain a big part of the fight for the trophy.

Granada are in last place and are the only team in Spain's first division yet to win a match, and with four losses in the last five matches, they are definitely not in a good run of form ahead of a match against the world's best team. Barça are almost obligated to pick up a victory, and that's quite dangerous.

No football match should be taken for granted, but when the gap between two opponents is this big, the stronger team could be a little arrogant coming in and the weaker side could pull off a giant upset. Barça are not an arrogant team, however, and with the 'MSN' trio on the pitch they have a major chance of easily winning Saturday's match.

If you want to see Barça putting on a show and the world's best players scoring some goals, this should be the game for you. Every game with Messi, Suárez and Neymar is must-watch, and when they are likely to give us an amazing performance, you just cannot miss.

Goalkeepers: 1. Marc-André ter Stegen, 13. Jasper Cillessen

Defenders: 14. Javier Mascherano, 19. Lucas Digne, 20. Sergi Roberto, 23. Samuel Umtiti, Marlon Santos (Barça B), Nili Perdomo (Barça B)

The injury crisis forced Lucho to look at the youth Academy, and three Barça B players will be on the bench: center-back Marlon, full-back Nili and midfielder Aleñá aren't likely to play, but the experience to be on the locker room and the bench at Camp Nou will certainly be a highlight in their young careers.

Rafinha and Cillessen declared fit and in FC Barcelona squad versus Granada | FC Barcelona
Barça have a number of injury concerns for today’s Liga fixture with Granada at the Camp Nou, so Luis Enrique has had plenty to think about before announcing his squad of eighteen for the match. All of Gerard Piqué, Andrés Iniesta, Jordi Alba and Jeremy Mathieu miss the game as expected, and Arda Turan has also failed to recover from a badly swollen foot in time and Aleix Vidal also sits the game out with adductor problems.

FC Barcelona are ready for their match against Granada | FC Barcelona

FC Barcelona v Granada marks 1,500th competitive fixture at Camp Nou | FC Barcelona
Saturday's game between Barça and Granada will be the 1,500th competitive first team match at the Camp Nou. It has been just over 59 years since Barça beat Jaén 6-1 in the first ever league game at their new stadium on 6 October 1957. That was twelve days after the ground had been officially inaugurated with an opening ceremony and an exhibition match against a Warsaw XI.

Barcelona Denis Suarez deserves a shot in Andres Iniestas absence against Granada - ESPN FC
Barcelona are preparing for Saturday's game against Granada without their captain Andres Iniesta. The midfielder was taken off in the first half of last weekend's incident-packed win against Valencia with knee ligament damage and will be out for up to eight weeks. He may not play again until the new year.

FC Barcelona head coach Luis Enrique not making any excuses | FC Barcelona
Luis Enrique spoke to the media ahead of Saturday's game against Granada and highlighted the inevitability of his players getting injured as "we try and avoid taking risks, but with our fixture list it is normal to have injuries." The Barça coach referenced the team's packed schedule which sees them take on Granada, Manchester City and Sevilla in the next week.

Boston Red Sox third baseman Pablo Sandoval visits FC Barcelona's training session | FC Barcelona
The 30-year-old slugger — who is in Barcelona to visit the city and will be on hand at Camp Nou Saturday night for the game — is not the first Major League star to fulfill a dream such as this. Last season, the Toronto Blue Jays outfielder José Bautista made a trip to Barcelona and attended a training session and a game as part of a family heritage tour of Spain.

Barcelona manager Luis Enrique backs Pep Guardiola to succeed at Manchester City

"Don't worry about the critics"

Pep Guardiola is going through a rough period as Manchester City manager, but one of his friends is confident he'll do well there.

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique was asked about Pep's six-game winless streak, which is the worst run of results in Guardiola eight-year career as a manager. That poor run of form has sparked a wave of criticism from a lot of people in England, but Lucho is pretty confident in Pep's ability to turn things around and have a lot of success at City.

In fact, Enrique believes Pep will win titles (plural) still in his first season with the Sky Blues, and Guardiola's brand of football will succeed in English football:

“I would say don’t worry about the critics [to Guardiola]. He will win titles this year with the football he was playing at the beginning of the season and with the football he’s always played.

“These critics and this criticism will always appear because people are bothered by the same people winning all the time. City will win playing good football and putting on a show.”

Having played with Pep and knowing as well as anyone how Guardiola's system works, Lucho is in a pretty good position to back his friend up. They clash for the last time in the Champions League group stage on Tuesday, and maybe that game will spark City into the success Lucho knows they will have under Pep.

FC Barcelona Transfer Rumors: Liverpool full-back linked with Camp Nou move in January

Good option?

Sergi Roberto needs a backup at Barcelona thanks to the sad ending of Aleix Vidal's career, so obviously the names keep popping up.

After Héctor Bellerín from Arsenal, João Cancelo from Valencia, Darijo Srna from Shakhtar Donetsk, Stephan Lichtsteiner from Juventus and GLEN JOHNSON FROM STOKE CITY (I SWEAR HE WAS LINKED, I'M NOT KIDDING), the latest possible Blaugrana target is Liverpool right-back Nathaniel Clyne, one of the best performers in the Reds' impressive start to the season in the Premier League.

Clyne has been a very good addition to the Liverpool squad since joining the club from Southampton last year. The 25-year-old is a reliable defender and makes very good runs going forward, and playing in a Jürgen Klopp team, he's clearly got big stamina and can run and press high up the pitch for 90 minutes, which suits the Barça style. Klopp is playing a possession-based game in England, and Clyne looks very comfortable in that system, which has similar traits to the Barça way.

Clyne would cost around €20 million, which isn't a giant price tag. It really doesn't seem like a bad idea to sign him as solid backup to Roberto, but there's one little problem: the report linking Clyne to Barça comes from The Sun, which is the worst source of transfer rumors in England.

The link makes sense and Clyne is a good option, but with the link coming from The Sun, it's really impossible to believe the report. But we never know.

Even Jose Mourinho will be sad when Leo Messi eventually stops playing

Barcelona to exercise option to sign on-loan Brazilian defender on permanent deal - Report

Marlon is a beast, and he'll be a Barça player - permanently

Marlon Santos has been the most pleasant surprise in Barcelona so far this season. The Brazilian joined the club on loan from Fluminense in the summer with the original plan for him to play at Barça B until the end of the season, but he was so impressive in preseason with the first team that the loan will become a permanent deal.

That's according to a report from Diario Sport, which claims the Catalan giants will exercise the option to buy Marlon for a €6 million fee, and they are still going to do it this year. First team coach Luis Enrique and Barça B manager Gerard López are very excited about Marlon's talent and performances, and they have advised sporting director Robert Fernández to sign the 21-year-old as soon as possible.

Marlon has already made three first team appearances (including preseason), and he was very good in all of those. His physical dominance, ball-playing skills and composure stood out while playing with the big stars, and Marlon is expected to be included in the squad for Saturday's La Liga match against Granada and the Champions League game against Manchester City thanks to the injury crisis in the Blaugrana defense.

Well done, Marlon! You're a beast - and you're about to be a Barça player for real. Parabéns, muleke!

Off-the-radar: Paco Alcácer and the death of modern football

RIP.

Big clubs will spend big money. Ridiculous money. The transfer market is more of a way to make statements, and undoubtedly fans of these clubs love this time of year more than any other time.

Over analysis of the transfer fee spent, whether the player will succeed, dominates headlines. The player says it's a dream, the club says the player will be a fantastic addition, a superb reinforcement to the squad. Every signing is the same.

Except it isn't. It never is.

This transfer window, astronomical sums have been spent without anyone batting an eyelid. Apparently, it's normal to spend 90 million euros on a 29 year old striker. Believably unbelievable, hardly understandable, almost unfathomable sums of money - would you pay that much to see a player play football?

But that's a debate for another day. What isn't a debate, is that sports clubs - oh sorry, public limited companies, according to Spanish law - are businesses and players are business deals. What isn’t a debate is that big clubs get richer as smaller clubs get poorer. What isn’t a debate is that smaller clubs need help - money - that will come if more people support and want to see the club play - which also takes money. And with no one willing to start the vicious cycle of "spend money to make money", these clubs will embrace a major cash injection.

Enter Peter Lim.

Valencia isn’t a small club by any means - but it’s debt was big enough. Valencia certainly doesn’t have a small support group - but its international appeal wasn’t huge enough. And Valencia certainly wasn’t in need of major cash, but after selling many of their stars fans wanted to see success again. They were desperate enough.

And that, is why everything is wrong with football today. Football actually meant something once - it had a sociopolitical meaning. It wasn’t about success or failure, but about a means of expression. Most fans don’t really care about that anymore - it’s all about trophies and analysis and armchair management now. And the fans who do? They’re being prosecuted, by the government, by police and by their own clubs.

Football is an entertainment product, but it’s not just that. The risk isn’t that the entertainment will end, but that it won’t represent those that the club was meant to represent.

But what is the point I’m making? The title talks about Paco Alcácer, so what about him?

The point is, I didn’t want him to join Barcelona. It’s the most foolish statement to make. But this transfer meant much more than just a player moving from a smaller company to a bigger one.

This was the final nail in the coffin. A player who was both a valencianista and valencianismo, moved to Barcelona because a club that could’ve done without foreign support, took it anyway and overspent, then backtracked and sold the player who most represents the club.

Valencia fans were no doubt angry. But you know what’s the worst part?

For both clubs, it’s just a bloody business deal. Nothing more.

La Liga: FC Barcelona vs Granada CF: Match Preview

A look ahead to Barcelona's Saturday evening clash with Granada

FC Barcelona will be looking to extend their winning streak to four matches tomorrow night, as they welcome Granada CF to the Camp Nou. At the start of the season, Culés would have earmarked this fixture as a must-watch encounter, as former Rayo Vallecano coach and football purist, Paco Jemez, was announced as the new man in charge in Andalusia. Of course, Barcelona’s matches with Paco Jemez and Rayo were always entertaining, goal-laden affairs – but after six matches with a win to start his reign at Nuevo Los Carmenes, Jemez was given the boot.

As such, tomorrow’s match becomes less of a “must-watch” from an aesthetic perspective, and more of a potential banana skin as Lucas Alcarez looks to mastermind another upset against the title-chasing Blaugrana.

In his previous La Liga stint, it’s fair to say that Alcarez didn’t have the best of times against Barcelona; his Levante side were on the receiving end of two Manitas in the 2014-15 season – but in 2013-14, it was Barcelona’s visit and subsequent defeat against Alcarez in his previous spell at Granada that arguably cost them the title. No doubt he will have played the tape of that match back to his current squad in a bid to inspire them; the question is whether it will have made any difference.

Despite Jemez’ dismissal, Granada have not shown any signs of improvement in recent weeks. Without a permanent coach on the sidelines, they lost at home to Leganes before the international break, and even with Alcarez installed as their new manager, results have not improved. A humbling 7-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid must rank as the lowest point of their season to date and while it can be argued that their goalless draw with Sporting Gijon in Jornada 9 was an improvement, it should also be considered that their failure to win that match ensured they remain five points removed from safety.

In other words, this isn’t the ideal time for Granada to be visiting the Camp Nou.

And so, with a UEFA Champions League group stage visit to Manchester to think about in midweek, where Barcelona will again lock horns with former coach, Pep Guardiola, the only real concern that Luis Enrique will have headed into this match is complacency. It’s apparent that Granada are unlikely to have the quality to beat us – it’s up to us to ensure that we don’t take that for granted and that we still deliver a professional performance to keep the pressure on both Real Madrid and Sevilla.

TEAM NEWS

BARCELONA

After providing the majority of his first team squad with a well-deserved midweek mini-holiday, Luis Enrique will be hoping to see no signs of rustiness from his players. It’s true that he still has some injuries concerns to deal with, as Jasper Cillessen, Arda Turan and Rafinha Alcantara are all game-time decisions, while Andres Iniesta, Gerard Pique, Jeremy Mathieu and Jordi Alba are certain to miss out – but overall, the squad is still strong enough to not only beat Granada, but make a statement.

Ideally, Marc-Andre ter Stegen will be looking to keep his third successive home clean sheet – and while we established that both Pique and Alba are going to miss out, he will still be able to count on a strong defense. Sergi Roberto may be rested ahead of the UEFA Champions League and Sevilla double-header that we have coming up in the next week or so, and that could mean a return for the 3-4-3 system that Enrique has been experimenting with this campaign.

Javier Mascherano would occupy the role in the centre, with Samuel Umtiti on the left and Marlon (who featured in the Catalan Super Cup in midweek) could feature on the right. Of course, if Roberto is rested, Enrique could easily keep a back four – but that would mean recalling Aleix Vidal from the wilderness, or handing Nili his first La Liga start. At this stage, both seem equally unlikely.

In midfield, I expect to see Sergio Busquets start – and then later be substituted out – and the other three spots are very much up for grabs. With Rafinha a doubt for tomorrow’s match, I suspect that Enrique will abandon the 3-4-3 in favour of a more orthodox approach. Denis Suarez would be used in the “Iniesta” spot, and Ivan Rakitic would likely accompany him on the right-hand side of the central pairing – with Lucas Digne slotting into defense to provide the natural width on the left. If he is fit, I would be very intrigued to see Arda in the left-midfield position of a 3-4-3, operating behind Neymar – but that may have to wait for another day.

In attack, let’s not kid ourselves; the MSN will start, and they’re probably going to score a lot of goals. I know what you’re thinking – it’s overkill to start them all and we can dispatch Granada while resting at least one of them – but consider that they could put this game to bed in the first half and easily walk through the rest. Sometimes rest doesn’t have to include sitting on the bench.

GRANADA

With Paco Jemez in charge, Granada bolstered their squad in the summer with one of La Masia’s crown jewels, as Sergi Samper was loaned in to high expectations. In a squad that already boasted a bunch of former Barcelona, Barcelona B and La Masia talent, such as Oier Olazabal, David Lomban, Isaac Cuenca and Jon Toral, we all hoped that Samper would be able to establish himself as a regular.

However, with Jemez gone, Samper has found opportunities harder to come by, as he was left out of the squad altogether for Granada’s last match against Sporting Gijon. Lucas Alcarez prefers to play a 4-2-2-2 in the style of Diego Simeone and Atletico Madrid – albeit with lesser players. That means a combative double-pivot, with hard working players positioned on the wing behind two mobile forwards.

Granada will no doubt try to play as compact as possible – but whether that will be enough remains to be seen. One suspects that damage control is about the best they can hope for.

Barcelona vs Granada, 2016 La Liga: Projected Lineup

Report: Three Barça B players to be included in Barcelona squad for Granada match

Youngsters, rise!!!

The injury crisis currently happening at Barcelona has forced coach Luis Enrique to use his young players, and three of them will possibly get a chance to be in uniform for the next match.

According to a report from Diario Sport, Barça B center-back Marlon Santos, full-back Nili Perdomo and midfielder Álex Carbonell are highly likely to be included in the squad list for Saturday's La Liga match against Granada, which takes place on Saturday at Camp Nou.

Marlon is nearly a certainty. With the injury to Jérémy Mathieu in the Catalan Super Cup against Espanyol, only Javier Mascherano and Samuel Umtiti are the healthy center-backs in the first team, and both are expected to start against Granada, which means there won't be any CBs on the bench. The Brazilian has impressed at Barça B and in his first team opportunities, and having trained with the squad over the last few days he will probably be the third choice defender for the Granada game.

For Nili and Carbonell to be included, it all depends on the fitness of Aleix Vidal and Rafinha Alcântara. Vidal has a minor thigh injury and he's looking to be medically cleared before Saturday, but if he doesn't Nili will be on the bench. Rafinha has been dealing with a bruised rib, but if he trains normally on Friday, he will be on the squad. If he's rested for the Champions League game against Manchester City, though, Carbonell will also be called up.

Youngsters, rise!
