Barcelona potential Club World Cup opponent set as River Plate wins Copa Libertadores

As the current UEFA Champions League holders, Barcelona have earned the right to play the FIFA Club World Cup that will be held in Japan between December 10-20. We're still finding out the whole field of contestants, but the potential Barça opponent in the final has qualified.

Argentina giants River Plate have won the 2015 Copa Libertadores with a 3-0 over Mexico's Tigres UANL. The Millonarios, who were the worst of the teams in the Round of 16, came back and completed its redemption story with a dominant win over the alleged favorites.

River Plate's resurrection is one of the coolest stories for every fan of South American football. One of the most traditional clubs in the continent, the club found itself immersed in debts and ended up relegated to Argentina's second division for the first time ever in 2011. Only four years later, River paid everything, built a passionate, true South American fighting team loaded with young talent, and consecutively won the Copa Sudamericana, Recopa Sul-Americana and Copa Libertadores, the three most important Latin America tournaments, becoming again a true force down south of the football world.

Their story would be even more beautiful if they accomplish the pinnacle for non-European teams: winning the Club World Cup. The only problem: their opponent is very likely to be Barcelona.
