Having impressed at domestic level, Rafinha Alcantara will soon have a chance to impress for his country
FC Barcelona midfielder Rafinha Alcantara has been called up to Brazil's U-23 squad as the team prepares for next year's Olympic Games, which will be held in Rio de Janeiro. Being hosts, Brazil have qualified automatically. The 5-time world champions face the similar type of pressure that they faced last year from their fans due to the fact that, till today, they have not managed to win an Olympic Gold in football.
Alexandre Gallo's 23-man squad will go up against Paraguay's Olympic team later this month (27 March) in Vitoria. They then face a test against Mexico in the Brazilian city of Sao Luis two days later.
Squad:
Goalkeepers - David (Criciuma), Jacsson (Internacional), Jean (Bahia)
Defenders - Claudio Winck (Internacional), Douglas Santos (Atletico Mineiro), Maicon (Livorno), Wendell (Bayer Leverkusen), Doria (Sao Paulo), Luan (Vasco da Gama), Rodrigo Ely (Avellino), Wallace (Monaco)
Midfielders - Danilo (Braga), Fred (Shakhtar Donetsk), Lucas Silva (Real Madrid), Rafinha Alcantara (FC Barcelona), Rodrigo Caio (Sao Paulo), Anderson Talisca (Benfica)
Forwards - Alisson (Cruzeiro), Erik (Goias), Felipe Anderson (Lazio), Marcos Guilherme (Atletico Paranaense), Vinicius Araujo (Standard Liege), Vitinho (Internacional)
Some notable names are in there. There's Fred and Lucas Silva. 21-year-old forward Alisson has impressed in Cruzeiro's recent/current domination of the Brasileirao. Vinicius Araujo is on loan in Belgium from Valencia. Vitinho is currently on loan at Internacional from Russian giants CSKA Moscow and previously impressed when he played at Botafogo with Dutch legend Clarence Seedorf. We have been linked with Rodrigo Caio in the recent past, so perhaps keep an eye on him if you'll be watching these matches. Anderson Talisca and Felipe Anderson have been revelations for Benfica and Lazio respectively, with Talisca's contributions key to Benfica's current position - perched at the summit of the Liga ZON Sagres in Portugal. And, of course, our very own Rafinha.
Fingers crossed that Rafinha impresses like we know he can!
