Another Lionel Messi masterclass in Europe
Rewind 11 years and you will find that on April 8 2009 Lionel Messi was tearing Bayern Munich to shreds in a 4-0 Champions League win at the Camp Nou.
The Argentinian stroked home the first after latching on to Samuel Eto’o’s pass with just nine minutes on the clock and then set up the striker for the second three minutes later.
Messi should then have had a penalty after a challenge from Christian Lell but was instead booked for diving by referee Howard Webb.
The GOAT made amends by tapping home Barca’s third from close range after good work from Thierry Henry down the flank.
Messi helped tee up Henry to make it 4-0 to Barcelona before half-time and could have had more after the break in an irresistible performance.
Aftrer the game Bayern midfielder Mark van Bommel summed up his team’s chances ahead of the second leg of the quarter-final clash: “Perhaps if they only bring eight men to Munich then we have a chance.”
