Fans will not be in attendance anyway
FC Barcelona could play home matches at the Johan Cruyff Stadium, rather than Camp Nou, once football comes back. The idea has been mentioned in the Catalan media and is not too different from something that Real Madrid has already decided to do: play games at the Alfredo Di Stéfano stadium rather than the Santiago Bernabéu.
The stadium has the same dimensions as Camp Nou and is brand new. It’s supposed to replace the Mini Estadi, the home of Barcelona B and Barcelona’s women’s section.
One advantage of switching to playing there is that it’s adjacent to Barcelona’s training facilities, meaning there is no need to travel far for games. Another is that costs would be low, considering that it’s a much smaller stadium. Things as simple as the light bill, or how much security you need to hire, would go down. And finally, the fact that it’s a new stadium is an advantage. The grass is in great shape, and everything else should be tip-top as well.
Now to the negatives. The angles for TV picture won’t be as good. The cameras that can be installed are not as advanced and some of the angles are just not possible. The other question is whether the camera angles will be good enough to satisfy VAR requirements, which is mandatory.
Finally, it may come down to the players. Simply put, they will have to agree that the change won’t affect them. In theory, because the dimensions are the same, and there are no fans in attendance, the changes for the players should be minimal. But ultimately, it is the players themselves who should have final say about their level of comfort in making this switch.
