The former Barcelona player jokingly said that is why he got injured.

Former Barcelona and current Zenit Saint Petersburg forward Malcom has raised some eyebrows after joking that Zenit’s training sessions are much more intense than those at Barcelona.

He said he was in the middle of a double session when he was interviewed by Catalan radio. At Barcelona, the forward told them, he was used to training sessions only lasting 40 to 50 minutes.

“I think that’s why I got injured when I got here,” Malcom joked.

The interview breached many topics, most notably about his time at Barcelona.

“I miss Barcelona, I have good memories of the city, people on the street, the fans... they always send me messages of support, and I appreciate it very much,” the Brazilian said.

He says he keeps in touch most with the Portuguese speaking players: “I speak with Arthur, with Semedo, we were always together.”

Rafinha and Philippe Coutinho were also mentioned as players in this group.

“The biggest memory I have from my time at Barcelona is my goal against Real Madrid,” he recalled.

“The second is scoring in the UEFA Champions League, scoring with my first or second touch [against Inter Milan]. And then, living the dream of playing with the best.

“I believe I deserve more playing time. But as a player, you always want to play more.”

Malcom also played down suggestions that Josep Maria Bartomeu was not the real club president, but that it was really Lionel Messi who held all the power.

“When I was there, we were all a family. It’s not like Leo was the president... Leo would always ask us first, we would have meetings, discuss it, and then Leo, as captain, would speak with the manager and the president and the director. As a captain he spoke for the team. But first, he got everyone’s opinion,” he said.

“I can see Messi playing until he’s 40. I hope he keeps playing for many years so I can keep watching him.”
