Messi’s hurting the most, says Aguero

The striker says the loss is tough to take

Sergio Aguero says Argentina’s World Cup exit will hurt Lionel Messi the most because of all the pressure on the Barcelona star’s shoulders.

France knocked La Albiceleste out of the tournament on Saturday with a 4-3 win that sends them into the quarter-finals where they will face Uruguay.

Aguero says it’s a tough time for his team and particularly for their captain.

“We are all hurting, especially Leo. He is, for sure, the one who is the most hurt because all the pressure is on him each time the national team plays,” he said.

“When we lose like this, there just isn’t much to say. We simply have to thank the fans who came here for their support.”

Messi is yet to offer his view on the World Cup and whether he will continue with the national team, but it’s entirely possible this will be his last World Cup.

Argentina tried everything to help Messi, says Sampaoli

The coach has given his verdict

Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli said his team tried everything they could to help Lionel Messi during their 4-3 defeat to France on Saturday.

La Albiceleste’s World Cup hopes are over after they were beaten in a thrilling game as Les Bleus go into the quarter-finals.

Messi came up with two assists in the game and Sampaoli explained how his team tried to help the Barcelona star.

“We have the best player in the world and we had to try to create collective situations to really use that player who can have many brilliant moments.

”We tried many different tactics, surround him, create space for him, so we tried to use everything we had to allow him to do what he can do. Sometimes we managed it, sometimes we didn’t.

”[The players] fought until the end and they nearly equalised at the end and that’s what I really, really value. They worked very hard and I want to say thank you.”

Sampaoli also said he wouldn’t be quitting after the game although Javier Mascherano has announced his international retirement.

Mascherano offers Messi advice after World Cup exit

Some wise words from the former Barca man

Former Barcelona star Javier Mascherano had some words of advice for Lionel Messi after Argentina were knocked out of the World Cup by France on Saturday.

Jorge Sampaoli’s side went down 4-3 in a thrilling game which could potentially have been Messi’s last World Cup appearance.

It’s not known yet whether Messi will continue with the national team but Mascherano says he hopes he does not retire from the national team just yet.

“I hope that Messi has the desire to remain with the national team and I hope everyone leaves him alone,” he said.

“No one in international football feels the kind of pressure that Argentine players feel and I think we dealt with it pretty well.

“But now, Messi needs to remain calm. He should go on vacation with his family and he should keep playing football because the day that Messi decides not to play, we are all going to find out what a great player he really is.”

Mascherano made his 147th apperance for Argentina which makes him the country’s most capped player and he announced his international retirement after the match.

Uruguay 2-1 Portugal: Defensive Clinic

The Uruguay defense was simply sensational!

After Lionel Messi was knocked out earlier in the day, it was Cristiano Ronaldo’s turn to leave Russia early thanks to a 2-1 loss to Luis Suárez and Uruguay. In what was a thrilling 90 minutes of football, the South Americans put on a defensive clinic and saw their two superstars get the job done up front.

FIRST HALF

Both of these teams are really good defensively but have trouble creating chances, so we expected really good defending and not a lot of chances. And that’s what we got, but with the added bonus of an eary goal for Uruguay thanks to a great combination between Luis Suárez and Cavani, with the Barça man playing a perfect cross to the PSG superstar.

Uruguay sat deep and began defending for their lives as Portugal struggled to find any spaces and create any real opportunities, and what we saw for the entire half was a lot of fouls and stoppages of play. As we reached halftime, Portugal needed more creativity in midfield to get back in the game.

SECOND HALF

The Portuguese improved a lot in the early minutes of the final period by changing their formation to have more numbers in midfield, and they earned an early corner that was played into the box by Raphael Guerreiro and beautifully dispatched by Pepe for the equalizer.

Portugal looked ready to press even more and take the lead, but Cavani again popped up with a moment of brilliance and curled a sensational ball into the top corner to give his team the lead once more. But the game was not done giving us twists and turns, and when Cavani went off injured Uruguay had to play the final minutes without their best player on the night.

Uruguay clearly felt Cavani’s absence as they lost any counter attacking threat with only Luis Suárez trying to play against two central defenders, and they had to defend even harder as Portugal sent almost their entire team forward looking for an equalizer only to be stopped by Atlético Madrid duo José Giménez and Diego Godín, who both had incredible nights and defended for their lives until the end.

The final whistle came after a billion penalty shouts by a desperate Portugal side, and now Luis Suárez and his boys will face the French. That will be a crazy good game, and what could have been a Messi-Ronaldo quarterfinal is now a match between the two teams that actually deserve to be there.

Uruguay: Muslera; Cáceres, Giménez, Godín, Laxalt; Torreira, Vecino; Nández (Sánchez), Bentancur (Rodríguez), Cavani (Stuani); Suárez

Goals: Cavani (7’, 62’)

Portugal: Patrício; Ricardo, Pepe, Fonte, Guerreiro; William; Bernardo, Adrien (Quaresma), João Mário (Manuel); Guedes (André Silva), Ronaldo

Goal: Pepe (55’)

Messi should play the next World Cup

He’s the Sachin Tendulkar of football and his time will come

Lionel Messi and Argentina crashed out of the 2018 World Cup after barely making it to the knockout rounds.

This defeat hurts much less than the loss to Germany four years ago. Back then, Messi was in his prime and Argentina had looked acceptable for most of the tournament. There was a decent probability of the Albiceleste winning and Mario Gotze’s winning goal broke about a million hearts in extra-time.

This time around, Argentina has overachieved despite their elimination in the last 16. They did not deserve to qualify for the World Cup and if it wasn’t for Messi, the Argentina squad would be vacationing right now. They did not deserve to get out of the group stage but by some miracle, they did. After pulling off two absolute miracles, while some might have gotten their hopes up (after all, luck plays a huge part in such competitions), the truth was winning against France would have been asking for one miracle too many.

Messi doesn’t deserve to go out of the competition prematurely and he didn’t. This team pushed itself to the limit and whether we accept the result or not, the truth is that this is as far as Argentina deserved to go in the World Cup.

Messi’s career reminds me of the cricketing legend, Sachin Tendulkar. Tendulkar was arguably the greatest player of his generation and for years, he was denied a World Cup. He kept returning to the team in the hopes of laying his hands on that elusive trophy and when he did lift that trophy, I’m sure all that emotional struggle was worth it.

The parallels are remarkable. Both were young prodigies discovered in their teens before becoming the focal point of their teams. They both wore the number 10 and Sachin was an ambassador for Adidas too. Tendulkar was just as cherished and adored as Messi is. If it helps the comparison, they’re both short too.

Greatness has a price and sometimes, it comes when we are no longer leading the charge.

Messi is still capable of returning for the next World Cup and if his physiology permits it, he should play in 2022.

If there’s anyone in this generation of footballers who deserves the World Cup, it is Leo and he has to keep trying for his own sake if not ours.

France 4-3 Argentina: Instant Classic

WHAT. A. MATCH.

Lionel Messi is out of the World Cup and will most likely retire from international football after Argentina lost to France in a 4-3 classic. Messi had two assists, but was never really a factor in the game and the French deservedly won a fantastic 90 minutes of football. Samuel Umtiti and Ousmane Dembélé move on to the quarterfinals, but it’s hard to imagine Barcelona fans being happy right now.

FIRST HALF

Both of these teams have talent but don’t really know how to play together, so it was safe to expect a wild, crazy game. We got it. Argentina had plenty of possession but very few ideas on how to, you know, pass the ball to each other and get close enough to the box that you can maybe fire a shot. Whenever they lost the ball, France activated Kylian Mbappé, who made insane run after insane run and looked unplayable in the first 20 minutes.

Mbappé’s amazing start earned France a penalty that Antoine Griezmann easily scored. It seemed from that point on that the French were going to destroy Argentina, but the Albiceleste dodged a few bullets on defense and were just a little better with the ball, and slowly but surely the French could not be as dangerous. Lionel Messi was very quiet early on and pretty much allowed N’Golo Kanté to get the best of him, but that would change.

Messi became more active and started to move better without the ball, getting away from Kanté’s shadow and influencing attacking plays a lot more. He didn’t create anything special, but Argentina looked better once he started to touch the ball more. After a corner taken by Messi went out for a throw-in, the ball eventually found Ángel Di María, who launched a rocket from distance that went right into the top corner. It was a spectacular equalizer, a deserved result for the Argentine.

At halftime, a very good game of football was wide open, and maybe the last few minutes of the first half were enough to give Messi the blueprint to take over in the second. Or maybe France would be just too good and too much for Argentina.

SECOND HALF

The final period could not have started any better for Argentina: a free-kick from Banega fell to Messi, who took a shot towards goal that was deflected by Gabriel Mercado and went in to give the Albiceleste a 2-1 lead. We still had pretty much 45 minutes to go, so France had more than enough time to take the lead against a poor Argentina defense.

And they did. In a space of ten minutes, Benjamin Pavard (with an insane strike) and Kylian Mbappé (twice) scored three goals for the French and ended the tie quickly. As we reached the final 20 minutes Argentina were already done and the loss could be a historic one if France wanted to. France didn’t want to, and Argentina made it a little less painful when Messi assisted Sergio Agüero’s late goal.

This is one of the best games in World Cup history. Easily. Back and forth madness for 70 minutes, and a 20-minutes stretch in the second half that is probably the single craziest 20-minute stretch of all time. Messi is out of the World Cup, his international career is probably over, and he could never win a trophy with his country. Sometimes football can be that cruel.

France: Lloris; Pavard, Varane, Umtiti, Hernández; Mbappé (Thauvin), Pogba, Kanté, Matuidi (Tolisso); Griezmann (Fekir), Giroud

Goals: Griezmann (13’), Pavard (57’), Mbappé (64’, 68’)

Argentina: Armani; Mercado, Otamendi, Rojo (Fazio), Tagliafico; Pérez (Agüero), Mascherano, Banega; Pavón (Meza), Messi, Di María

Goals: Di María (41’), Mercado (48’), Agüero (90’+3)

Uruguay vs Portugal: LIVE BLOG!

It’s Suárez vs Ronaldo! Who will Barça fans support?????????

The World Cup Round of 16 is here! We have eight fantastic matchups with big nations looking for a quarterfinal place, and one of the most anticipated games of this phase is the one we’ll see tonight.

The Fisht Stadium in Sochi will be the home of Uruguay vs Portugal, which should produce fireworks in every sense of the word. These two teams are defensively solid, very physical and with one world-class striker that could win a game at any moment. Uruguay have Luis Suárez (and Edinson Cavani), and Portugal have Cristiano Ronaldo.

Yes, the Barcelona and Real Madrid superstars will dominate the headlines of this one, and deservedly so. But there’s so much more to look forward to. These teams hate possession and love intense, physical play at all times, so we could see quite a few yellow cards and not a lot of goals. Maybe one goal is enough to win this, and both teams have a world-class scorer of goals.

So yeah, this will be fun, and I simply cannot imagine which team Barcelona fans will be supporting here. Just kidding, we all want Portugal to win. RIGHT???????????

Anyway, LET’S LIVE BLOG (when the team news come out)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Coutinho is Brazil’s best player not Neymar, says Mexico boss

Brazil take on Mexico in the last 16 of the World Cup and Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio says he’s wary of the threat posed by Philippe Coutinho.

Coutinho has enjoyed a brilliant tournament so far with two goals and an assist in his three games and Osorio says he’s their best player.

“At the draw, speaking with Tite, he asked me who I considered his best player,” he said.

“And I told him Coutinho, ahead of the rest.

“No one doubts the talent that Brazil have in attack, with Willian, Douglas Costa, Neymar... but I think Coutinho makes the difference because he’s a player that can play anywhere in midfield or further forward.

”He is a player we will have to watch out for and he’s really important to Brazil’s game.”

Zabaleta explains which team Messi plays with on FIFA

It’s a surprise choice from the Argentine

Pablo Zabaleta revealed that while he and Lionel Messi were team-mates they used to dabble in a bit of FIFA. Turns out, while they were playing FIFA they each used to have favorite teams.

You might think Lionel Messi either preferred to play as Barcelona or as a club from Argentina, perhaps even the Argentinian national team. No, Messi’s favorite team to play on FIFA with was none other than Chelsea FC.

Check out the video below where Zabaleta talks all about Messi.

Now, some blogs might perhaps twist this and say that Messi really loves Chelsea. Perhaps so much that he would even consider playing for them in more than FIFA. Like I’m not trying to say that Messi is going to go to Chelsea, because that would be irresponsible.

What I’m trying to say is that Messi is already signed for Chelsea, they’re just waiting for FIFA 19 to come out to announce it.

Peace.

France vs Argentina; LIVE BLOG!

It’s Messi vs Umtiti and Dembélé!

The World Cup is now officially LIT as we reach the knockout rounds. The group stage was a lot of fun with plenty of great goals, great performances and shocking results, but now it’s time for the real big nations to clash for a place in the quarterfinals.

And the Round of 16 begins with perhaps the biggest matchup of this phase: France and Argentina will clash in Kazan today, and good lord this should be fun. The French are one of the favorites and have a crazy amount of talent all over the squad, but they just haven’t managed to put together a top class collective performance yet.

They’ll have to do that in this one, because they’re about to face Lionel Messi. Yes, Argentina are not even close to favorites and they are simply a mess. So what do you do to take care of the mess? Turn to Messi. (I am proud of this joke and I don’t care what you think).

And it should be a treat for Barça fans, too, because it’s Messi against Samuel Umtiti and Ousmane Dembélé. They are all expected to start this one, and it should be really fun to watch. Can Messi shock the world by beating the mighty French? Will France’s play finally match their talent? We’ll find out.

So join us after the team news are announced for a LIVE BLOG! It’ll be fun!

Sampaoli says he wasn’t asking for Messi’s advice

He was telling him not asking, apparently

Argentina boss Jorge Sampaoli has denied claims he asked Lionel Messi for advice on whether to bring on Sergio Aguero against Nigeria on Tuesday.

Footage emerged after the game of Sampaoli talking on the pitch with Messi shortly before Aguero was brought on. The Argentina coach has now given his version of events.

“We looked at different options in an important game and had to make a decision,” he said.

”I was simply communicating this, saying we were going to use a strategy we had rehearsed to use more attacking players.

”It was a simple exchange I had with one of my players, that is all.”

The tale of a young dreamer who, as a kid, set his mind on one day playing for Barcelona, as told by his fans, admirers and those he continues to inspire.

Deschamps says France will try to ‘neutralise’ Messi

The two teams meet in the last 16 of the World Cup

France boss Didier Deschamps has been talking about Saturday’s World Cup clash with Argentina and how his team plan to handle Lionel Messi.

Messi was on target against Nigeria last time out when he scored a brilliant goal as Argentina won 2-1.

The Barcelona ace will be hoping to help Argentina into the quarter-finals with a win over France and Deschamps is well aware of the threat his team faces.

“Messi is Messi. You just have to look at his statistics: 65 goals in 127 matches with his national team,” he said.

”Hopefully we are able to neutralise him but we know very well he can make the difference on his own.

“We don’t have a specific plan for him, though. A plan is a big word. The idea is to limit his influence.

”When you play Argentina and Messi on the pitch there are several solutions to limit his impact.”

Rumors: Willian bid rejected, Pjanic move off & Lenglet latest

Chelsea reject Barca’s huge Willian bid

Today’s rumors start with Chelsa who have apparently rejected a £50 million bid from Barcelona for Willian.

According to the Daily Mail (so, you know), Barca want to add Willian to their attack and think he can link up well with Philippe Coutinho.

Willian’s representatives are said to have been in Barcelona, but Chelsea aren’t that keen on letting the Brazilian leave Stamford Bridge.

Barcelona give up on Pjanic

Over at Marca the word is that Barcelona have given up on their attempts to sign Miralem Pjanic from Juventus.

The Serie A champions want at least €80 million for the midfielder which has put Barcelona off trying to bring him in this summer.

Ariedo Braida effectively said as much in the week and it looks as though this is one player who is no longer on the club’s radar.

Lenglet to reveal future on Saturday

Saturday is D-Day when it comes to Clement Lenglet because that is when he will reveal his future plans, according to his agent Gregory Dakad.

The defender doesn’t sound like he’s going to go full Antoine Griezmann and release a 30 minute self-indulgent video, but he will let Sevilla know whether he’s staying or going, according to Sport.

Lenglet has a release clause of €35 million and it’s expected that Barcelona will activate it in July unless the defender decides he wants to stay where he is.

Cillessen wants to leave

And finally today we end with news that goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen has decided he’s bored of sitting on the bench and wants to leave Barcelona.

Cillessen is happy at the club but has other offers where he would be first-choice and is understandably tempted, so say Sport.

The goalkeeper has a release clause of €60m but Barca may be willing to sell for half that as they as they want to avoid a long and drawn out transfer saga.

Messi goes the extra kilometre for Argentina

The stats show he means business

Everyone wanted something extra from Lionel Messi and Argentina in their last group stage match against Nigeria. Well, after they came away with a win the statistics backup what we saw on the pitch. In his first two games against Iceland and Croatia, Messi ran around 7,600 meters across 96 minutes in each game.

Both games didn’t really go as Argentina planned and made things dire heading into their last group stage match. Against Nigeria, Messi came out on fire and ended up running a total of 8,702 meters in 96 minutes, according to Fifa’s match stats.

Just because you run more doesn’t mean that you’ve necessarily played much better or done more. However, when you see what Messi did via the eye test, the running statistics are a nice metric of how well he really played and the effort he put into the match.

Umtiti discusses facing Messi at the World Cup

The defender says he’ll try to stop him

Samuel Umtiti is set to face Lionel Messi on Saturday when France take on Argentina in the last 16 of the World Cup.

It’s been a rollercoaster of a World Cup for Argentina so far but they remain in the competition after a 2-1 win over Nigeria.

France have had a slightly easier time but Umtiti knows he’ll be in for a tough afternoon against his Barcelona team-mate.

”I really feel that he doesn’t live football like others do - in the way he sees it, in the choices he makes and in the goals he scores,” he said.

”He just keeps scoring goals after goals. He has it in him. He doesn’t like losing. He always wants to win games and titles. I didn’t expect that from him because he already won everything. It’s his state of mind.”

”I see him everyday. It is very hard to stop him. He’s got outstanding qualities. We will try to stop him but he’s not the only one in this Argentina team, they have other strikers.”

Barcelona pushing for De Jong

Ajax want €50m for the youngster

Barcelona and Ajax are reportedly getting a bit closer to a deal for Frenkie de Jong. The move would be a nice addition for Barcelona’s midfield ranks, but the price has been the one thing that seems to be keeping the teams apart for the time being.

The Dutch club apparently want €50m for the midfielder while Barcelona have been trying to grab the player for a bit less. The good news is that unlike Barcelona’s high price pursuits of last summer, a deal that quibbles over a few million is vastly different then 10’s of millions of dollars.

It remains to be seen what the deal would be for should Barcelona and Ajax actually come to an agreement, but should talks effectively restart soon the deal could be done in time for the club’s preseason.

Barcelona 2018/19 away kit leaked

Serbia vs Brazil: LIVE BLOG!

Coutinho and Paulinho need a point to qualify, but it will be a tough night!

It’s World Cup Day 14! The group stage is coming to an end and we now know four of the eight Round of 16 matchups. Two more will be decided today, and two big Barcelona players will be hoping to book their ticket to the knockouts.

Brazil and Serbia clash in Moscow in what promises to be a very tough game for the Seleção. They’ll be out of the tournament if they lose to the Serbians as long as Switzerland get at least a point against Costa Rica, and Serbia have proven in the first two games they’re a tough costumer.

Serbia are a physical team with talented midfielders and a monster of a striker in Aleksandar Mitrovic, and they absolutely can win this one and cause perhaps the biggest upset of the World Cup by eliminating the five-time winners in the group stage.

So Brazil will need to play their best football, which they haven’t so far, but Philippe Coutinho was the start of the first two games and will also probably be among the biggest reasons for a Brazil success tonight. Paulinho hasn’t had a great tournament yet, but he has the trust of his manager and will start once again. As we’ve seen all season at Barcelona, he doesn’t need to play well to run into the box and score at any moment, so his team will surely be hoping for more of that.

You don’t need to be a Brazilian like me to watch this game, so join me for a live blog! I can’t promise to be unbiased.

Barcelona say they’re not interested in Pjanic

Barcelona have been heavily linked with a move for Juventus midfielder Miralem Pjanic in recent weeks but director Ariedo Braida reckons they are not interested.

Braida was asked about speculation over a move for Pjanic and said there have been no talks and he didn’t think there would be either.

“There are no negotiations and I don’t think we’re interested in him,” the former Milan general manager told

“He’s a good player, but now we have a Brazilian who will take on that role [of ‘regista’] because Barcelona are banking on him.

“There are those who take care of the market for Barcelona, but certainly I know the club’s strategy and Pjanic doesn’t fit into it.”

His comments are prettty interesting because he says Barca don’t need Pjanic because Arthur is coming, yet we still don’t know if he’ll arrive this summer or in the winter.

Nigeria vs Argentina: LIVE BLOG!

One of the biggest games of Lionel Messi’s international career is upon us!

Day 13 of what’s been a fantastic World Cup is upon us, and this may be the biggest of all for Barcelona fans. Depending on how this one goes, we might not care about this tournament at all anymore, and it’s all about the best player of all time.

Lionel Messi and Argentina take the pitch in St. Petersburg against Nigeria fighting for their lives. Even though they have just one point and suffered an embarrassing loss to Croatia, the Albiceleste are in a pretty comfortable position to advance. The formula is simple: beat Nigeria and score more goals than Iceland. If Iceland don’t beat Croatia, a 1-0 win is enough.

But a win is a must. No other result helps Argentina, and the problem is they haven’t given us any reason to believe they can beat Nigeria. So as it always is when it comes to big Argentina games, Lionel Messi will have to decide. The last time he was faced with that scenario, Messi scored a hat-trick away from home against Ecuador in the final night of the World Cup Qualifiers and sent his nation to Russia. So yeah, he can get the job done for his team.

This will be nervous, but it could also be a lot of fun. Don’t miss it, and join us for the live blog when the team news are announced!

Rafinha says he’s ready for ‘anything’ regarding his future

He’s still a Barcelona player, for now at least

Barcelona’s Rafinha Alcantara has spoken up regarding his return to the Camp Nou after a loan at Inter Milan. Rafinha has been quite vocal about his enjoyment of Inter as a club in the past. It seemed as if a permanent move was imminent, but it never came to fruition.

“Inter was a spectacular experience,” Rafinha said.

“It was a style of football and a language I didn’t know. It was important for me to get back to playing as many games as possible after my injury. I knew my ability to adapt quickly would be important.

“Thanks to my teammates and the Nerazzurri fans, I was very well received and I regained my confidence in playing my style of football.

“I had a great time at Inter and I was thinking of staying. I was really convinced that with qualification for the Champions League I’d have stayed, but it didn’t happen.

“Football is still a business and sometimes people’s wishes aren’t fulfilled. Right now I’m a Barcelona player.

“I still haven’t met with the club, but in my head I have the idea of presenting myself for pre-season training on July 11 and then we’ll see.

“I’m ready for anything.”

Rafinha Alcantara | Source

How long Rafinha will be at Barcelona is a mystery, although it’s very clear he wishes the Inter move was permanent, he seems to be taking the right attitude regarding his return to Barcelona.

Messi looks stressed and unhappy - Zabaleta

Lionel Messi is looking stressed and unhappy at the World Cup and that’s a real worry for Argentina, according to former defender Pablo Zabaleta.

The Barcelona star has been unable to shine in Russia so far but will be hoping to put that right on Tuesday when Argentina face Nigeria in a must-win clash.

Zabaleta says he feels sorry for Messi and feels that too much is expected from the 31-year-old, in a column written for BBC Sport.

“The happiest I saw Lionel Messi when I played alongside him for Argentina was in 2012 - he scored a hat-trick against Brazil in New York, and he played the whole game with freedom and a smile on his face.

“His body language was completely the opposite before the Croatia game on Thursday. To see Leo looking so stressed and unhappy at this World Cup was a real worry.

“He is my friend as well as my former team-mate and I felt really sorry for him. It is very unusual to see him like that, but it was a sign of what was going on in his head.

“At times like this, there is a huge pressure on him because people expect too much, and for him to do everything for the national team.”

Source | BBC Sport

Messi looked super stressed ahead of the defeat to Croatia but he has looked far more relaxed in training this week and has been spotted smiling and joking with team-mates.

Nigeria’s win over Iceland means Argentina have been given a second chance in the tournament but they’ll need a big improvement if they are to make it through.

The defender has been linked with a move away

Yerry Mina has addressed speculation over his future and says he does not want to leave Barcelona and never has.

The defender has been heavily linked with a move away this summer, particularly if Barcelona bring in Arthur because the club will need to free up a non-EU spot.

However, Mina reckons he has no intention of quitting the Camp Nou after just a few months.

“For me, Barcelona are the best team in the world. I don’t want to leave and I never have. I like the club, the city, the people, the players here... everything,” he told EFE after the Poland game.

“It’s wonderful because I always feel supported. Now I am relaxed, I’ve been doing things in the best way possible, trying to improve, because that’s what I want.”

Mina started his first game at the World Cup on Sunday and scored in Colombia’s 3-0 win over Poland. Jose Pekerman’s side are back in action on Thursday when they face Senegal.

Barcelona renews Abel Ruiz, including €100m release clause

Barcelona has renewed B team member Abel Ruiz’s contract this week. The striker arrived in Barcelona in 2012 and has been one of the favorites to break into the first team in the coming years.

The contract is quite friendly to Barcelona. Featuring three more seasons with two optional on the Barcelona side. To make things even more favorable should Ruiz get as good as expected, is that the buyout clause is €100 million.

Ruiz was fantastic for Barcelona B last year and has the potential to really assist on the first team this season. He could add some depth to a squad that may need it should injuries occur.

Suarez on target as Uruguay through as group winners

The Barcelona striker opened the scoring

Luis Suarez was on target for Uruguay on Monday as the team booked their place in the last 16 of the World Cup as group winners.

The Barcelona striker scored after just 10 minutes with a sweetly-struck free-kick which flew into the bottom corner.

The strike was his seventh World Cup goal for Uruguay and only Oscar Miguez has more.

A Denis Cheryshev own goal put Uruguay 2-0 up and, the hosts’ afternoon got even worse as Igor Smolnikov was sent off 10 minutes before half-time.

Edinson Cavani completed the win late on as he tapped home from close range as Uruguay put in their best performance of the tournament so far.

The win means Uruguay finish as winners of Group A and go through to meet the runners-up of Group B which could be Spain, Portugal or even Iran.

Gerard Piqué to James Rodríguez: “I Always Said You Were Barça Material”

The Barcelona defender has issued an invitation to the former Real Madrid midfielder

Gerard Piqué sat down with James Rodríguez for an interview for The Players’ Tribune, in which the defender issued an invitation to his former Real Madrid rival.

After a 20-minute interview, Piqué thanked James for letting him into his home, and then said “you are invited to Barcelona whenever you want” - ambiguous, as he could have meant merely to visit his house in the city, not to join the team.

But then he made it explicit: “And I don’t know, Barça some day. I have always said you were Barça material. Your form of playing, your way of understanding football. But in the end, in your career, no one knows where you’ll end up. But you’d be welcome.”

James simply said thanks while laughing.

Piqué also asked James if the famous Cristiano Ronaldo birthday party at which singer Kevin Roldán performed after Real Madrid lost 4-0 to Atlético Madrid affected them later throughout the season. Piqué memorably thanked Roldán in Barcelona’s title celebrations, but James insisted the party did not impact the team in any way.

No report has linked James, who is currently at Bayern Munich, with a move back to La Liga. The two are at the FIFA World Cup (Piqué with Spain and James with Colombia) right now.

Spain vs Morocco: LIVE BLOG!

Four Barça boys back in action for La Roja!

The third week of the World Cup starts today, and it’s actually a little sad. We’ll no longer have three live games throughout the day, and 16 nations are about to go home. But it’s also really fun because the real decisive matches begin, and then the World Cup turns into a marvelous bloodbath.

Many Barcelona players are probably going through to the knockout stages, and four of them are part of a team that could be the big favorites going into the Round of 16: Gerard Piqué, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets and Andrés Iniesta (forever a Barça player) were part of two very impressive performances from Spain, who don’t really seem to be missing their manager and played great football in their opening two group games.

Their final group stage fixture is against Morocco, who are already eliminated despite playing some great stuff themselves. La Roja need to score more goals than Portugal to secure first place if both teams win their matches, so Spain will need to take this game very seriously and not worry about the opposition.

And it would be nice if one of the Barça players scored for Spain. So far this has been the Madrid show with Diego Costa from Atlético and Nacho from Real finding the net, so let’s hope a Blaugrana gets a goal in this one. Let’s all follow this one together with a fun live blog once the team news are out!

Ajax understandably don’t want to sell as he is an important asset and they know his price will only rise, but De Jong’s willingness to move may help Barcelona in negotiations.

The 21-year-old is happy to move either this summer or next and has told Ajax that Barcelona is the club he wants to join if he is sold.

Convincing Ajax to negotiate still looks to be the tricky part and there’s still a long way to go before a deal can be done.

Interestingly the report also reckons that De Jong is “one of the three options they [Barcelona] have at the moment,” when it comes to strenthening midfield.

The club have also been linked with Thiago and Miralem Pjanic, while they are also believed to be keen to bring in Arthur this summer too.
