It seems like Barcelona have thrown €5 million away and will miss out on the next Paul Pogba.
Sources from Brazil have told Barça Blaugranes on Monday that AS Roma have made a €17 million offer to Fluminense for Blaugrana target midfielder Gerson. The offer, officially presented last week, was forwarded to the Catalan club, who had acquired priority to sign the 18-year-old back in May. However, club officials reportedly decided not to match the offer, which frees the Rio de Janeiro club to negotiate directly with the Serie A runners-up.
We have covered Gerson at length in our scouting report, and every performance shows that the kid has tons of potential. He was first approached by Juventus, and was rumored to be a part of the deal for Pogba to join Barcelona, but the Scudetto holders ultimately decided to pull back on the talks, leaving the Blaugrana as the clear front-runners to land the Brazilian phenom.
Time went by, the transfer window opened, and the Treble winners never made a move. Until Roma showed up, made an official approach, presented an offer, struck a deal with the player and pressured Barça into making a decision.
That decision has now been made, and it is very likely Gerson will be announced as a Roma signing in the next few days. Interestingly enough, Barça and Roma play each other in the Joan Gamper Trophy in just two days.
