With the departure of club legend and first team captain Xavi Hernández, Barcelona needed a new leader. They have one.
After a player-only vote approved by the coaching staff, it was decided that Argentina defender and team leader Javier Mascherano will enter the group as the fourth co-captain. He'll join Andrés Iniesta, Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets as the four members who lead and represent the squad.
The 30-year-old Argentine, who was just rumored to have had a €14 million offer from Juventus rejected by the Catalan giants, has been of the most consistent performers in recent years. He joined the Blaugrana in 2010 to serve as a backup to Sergio Busquets after the departure of Yaya Touré. Instead, Mascherano became a vital part of the Pep Team, using his versatility to become a starting center-back for Pep Guardiola.
His dedication and work ethic always stand out, and he is highly respected all across the club, from players to staffers to board members. A little over a year ago, he signed a contract extension that will keep him with Barça until 2020.
Mascherano deserves to be a co-captain. You're awesome, Jefecito.
