Xavi felt it should have been chalked off

Inkai Pena made his first start of the season for Barcelona against Rayo but couldn’t keep a clean sheet as the visitors were held to a 1-1 draw.

The youngster came in for the injured Marc-Andre ter Stegen but was beaten by Unai Lopez for the opening goal five minutes before half-time.

Xavi complained about the goal after the match, insisting it should have been ruled out for offside, but Pena didn’t really want to get drawn into a debate about the strike.

“We knew that they, with crosses and high pressure, make it difficult for the opposition. I wanted to convey a sense of tranquility to the team,” he told AS.

“I’m happy, the first half cost us more, the goal was a shame, in the second half we were superior and the goal came. We took Rayo out of our half, which is what we wanted.

“If they interfered with me in the first goal? From the goal it was very difficult to see it, that’s what the VAR is for. It’s a shame about the goal.”

It remains to be seen if Pena will start again in midweek against Porto. Ter Stegen has said he hopes to be back soon but is thought to be a doubt for the clash.
