Barcelona would love the boost of a trophy
The Spanish Supercup is one of the least important pieces of silverware a team like Barcelona can win. We have grown accustomed to the Catalan giants seeing it as a relatively low priority.
But things are a bit different today.
It’s a minor trophy, yes. But it is indeed a trophy. And for a Barcelona that has been struggling to achieve the heights of previous seasons, one that went trophyless the last season, and one that has struggled just to get into its current third place spot in La Liga, that’s important.
For a lot of young players, this may be their first silverware at senior level. For some veterans, such as Martin Braithwaite or Antoine Griezmann, it would be their first trophy they’ve won for Barcelona.
Both Ronald Koeman and Sergio Busquets mentioned that winning the Supercup would help the team develop during their pre-match press conferences. They also said that they are looking to build to bigger prizes.
Because of that, it’s important not to overstate the Supercup’s importance. Losing a final would still be a learning experience. It could eventually pay dividends even in defeat. It should not lead to a state of depression.
However, winning is the easier path. It will help the team grow in confidence and make winning a habit. It will bolster faith in the manager and make everyone buy into the plan.
Yes, it’s just the Supercup. But right now, it may be just what they need.
