A new year but more chaos
Barcelona’s presidential elections, which had been scheduled for January 24, look set to be postponed, according to multiple reports from Spain.
The club announced on Thursday that there were now three candidates, Joan Laporta, Victor Font and Toni Freixa, left in the race after the validation process had taken place.
Yet it now seems there will be a delay to the voting process because of the coronavirus pandemic and the current restrictions in place.
Catalunya Radio report the club met with the Government on Friday to discuss a way forward and ask about the possibility of voting by post which could take at least a month.
The report adds that interim president Carles Tusquets is due to meet with club management and the three candidates later today to discuss the latest developments.
At the moment it’s not clear what will happen next except that the elections will not take place on January 24 as initially expected. This will of course impact on Barca’s transfer plans and means it’s difficult to see any new players arriving this month.
Laporta is the current favorite to be named as the next president, after collecting the most signatures, but it might still be a while before a replacement for Josep Maria Bartomeu is finally installed at the Camp Nou.
