Following an impressive win over Borussia Dortmund to secure a spot in the Champions League Round of 16, Barcelona return to action in La Liga with a very tough match ahead of them: a trip to the Spanish capital to face Atlético Madrid, a game that’s always been incredibly difficult for the Catalan giants.

This is one of the three key league games in December, with a trip to Anoeta to face a red-hot Real Sociedad and El Clásico against Real Madrid still to come. These three games will be crucial for Barça and may decide the title race if the champions aren’t able to get any wins in the away games and lose the Clásico at home.

With the Champions League stuff all taken care of it’s time to take a serious look at La Liga, and a win at Atlético is a serious statement of intent from the two-time defending champs. Antoine Griezmann is making his much-anticipated return to the Wanda Metropolitano, and it’s safe to expect a tough reception for the Frenchman.

It’ll be interesting to see if Barça rally around Griezmann and try to win it for him, and if he manages to have his best performance as a Blaugrana so far against his former club. This is a fascinating and crucial game, and one that will tell us a lot about the strength of this Barça team. Let’s do this, boys.

POSSIBLE LINEUPS

Barcelona (4-3-3): Ter Stegen; Roberto, Piqué, Lenglet, Firpo; Rakitic, De Jong, Arthur; Messi, Suárez, Griezmann

Atlético (4-4-2): Oblak; Trippier, Felipe, Hermoso, Lodi; Correa, Thomas, Saúl, Koke; Morata, João Félix

PREDICTION

I don’t know why I’m so confident ahead of this one, but I believe in the Law of the Ex and that Griezmann will put on a show and do some weird Fortnite dance: 2-0 Barça.

Valverde talks Dembele, Griezmann and Vidal ahead of Atleti

FC Barcelona v Borussia Dortmund: Group F - UEFA Champions League Photo by David Ramos/Getty Images

The latest from the Barcelona boss

Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde faced the press on Saturday ahead of his team’s clash against Atletico Madrid.

Valverde talked about Ousmane Dembele’s injury, Antoine Griezmann’s return to Atletico Madrid and Arturo Vidal’s comments he could potentially look to leave Barcelona in January.

Here are the best bits:

Valverde on Atletico

Atletico away is big test for anyone, one of the most important games of the season. We have to play well, we have to play good football to win. We’ve spoken about our away form, we’re not having our best season as far as results in the league are concerned. Whichever team wins tomorrow will have a big boost for their morale. Looking at our fixtures before Christmas we have tough games so this is a game we really have to win.

Valverde on Dembele

I spoke to him and obviously he’s down because of the injury. It’s a different leg than the last injury but it’s a similar type of thing. An important player for us to lose, there’s no doubt about that and he’s going to be out for a while. If we have to we’ll use the B team players, they’ve done well when called upon. Dembele has been playing well, morale was high so it’s an unfortunate setback for him.

He came here two years ago he was obviously very young but with great potential. He’s learnt the way things work at this club. He’s certainly learnt a few things. I won’t deny we’ve spoken about him a lot in these press conferences. But he’s settled and this is an unfortunate setback.

I’m not a specialist in muscle fibre. I say that everything comes from his first injury. He had a major operation then. I do not have a concrete idea [of why it happened], but he is a fast, explosive player.

Valverde on Griezmann

He gave everything to Atletico and had some great seasons there. Then he was transferred here, some people weren’t that happy. It’s not something that should affect us. Players are used to playing in difficult atmospheres.

Valverde on Vidal’s comments

I don’t think he’s trying to put pressure on the club. There’s a long time until the winter window, we have important games before them. Going to market is something we’ll have to think about. He’s settled very well since he arrived, he has a lot of character, we’re very happy with him. When he came here he knew he was coming to a team that had just won the double.

Valverde on Rakitic

He brings balance, he brings the midfield together, joins the attack and defence. He hasn’t played that much because there are other players. He’s certainly a possibility. He played a very good game the other day.

The Frenchman will head abroad to start treatment

Ousmane Dembele is set to begin treatment on his latest injury on Sunday at the Aspetar Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital in Qatar.

Barcelona confirmed on Friday that the French forward will miss the next 10 weeks after picking up a hamstring problem against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

He will now head to Qatar for the start of his rehab and will also have sessions back at Barcelona at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper.

The injury is Dembele’s ninth of his short Barcelona career and means he will miss almost three months of the season and will not return until February.

Messi just ‘walks and walks’ and then he scores - Trippier

The Atletico full-back takes on the GOAT on Sunday

Atletico Madrid full-back Lionel Messi has been full of praise for Lionel Messi ahead of Sunday’s La Liga clash against Barcelona at the Wanda Metropolitano.

The defender faced the Barcelona captain last season for Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League and spoke about what it’s like to play against the Argentinian.

“You play against Sadio Mane, for instance, and if you take your eye off him for a second, he’ll just dart in behind you,” he said.

”But with Messi, you look four times and he’s still there. It’s weird. A lot of the time he just walks and walks — and then, before you know it, it’s a goal.

“I’ve played against him a few times now and he’s so good at just picking up those little pockets of space. Before Barcelona have made three passes, he already knows where the ball’s going.

”It’s amazing how clever he is. Even when he’s walking like that, you’ve always got to be aware. He’s unbelievable, the best ever.”

Trippier also described midfielder Arthur as “an unbelievable player” and should face both players again on Sunday. The full-back made the move from Tottenham to Atletico over the summer and has become a regular in Diego Simeone’s team.

Peñarol vice president, Rodolfo Catino, says Barcelona were one of several clubs interested in Fede Valverde before he joined Real Madrid but weren’t willing to pay the asking price. Philippe Coutinho will be given time to prove himself at Bayern Munich under new manager Hansi Flick. Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has praised Lionel Messi again as the club celebrated its 120th birthday on Friday. There is no club in the world that has had as much success as Barca, with a player that has won six Golden Boots or has five Ballon d’Or awards. It has helped us to be more global and, compared to other times, has created a very strong era and we will be transformed by this era of the team and Messi.”

How will Barcelona line up against Atletico?

FC Barcelona v Borussia Dortmund: Group F - UEFA Champions League Photo by Pablo Morano/MB Media/Getty Images

The champions are at the Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday

Barcelona are back in action on Sunday against Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in La Liga.

The game sees Antoine Griezmann return to his former side and promises to be a tough test for Ernesto Valverde’s team.

Let’s have a look at who might feature on Sunday.

Defence

Leganes v FC Barcelona - La Liga Santander Photo by David S. Bustamante/Soccrates/Getty Images

Gerard Pique is available again after being suspended for the clash with Borussia Dortmund in midweek and should return to the starting XI.

He will partner either Samuel Umtiti or Clement Lenglet at the back. Umtiti is fighting for a place after returning to fitness but can he play three games in a week?

At full-back Sergi Roberto should continue in place of Nelson Semedo unless Moussa Wague gets the nod, while Junior Firpo looks set to keep his place at left-back.

Midfield

Barcelona will be without Sergio Busquets for this one due to suspension, while Ivan Rakitic will be hoping for another start after being a surprise inclusion against Dortmund.

Arthur wasn’t even in the squad for the midweek Champions League game but should return, while Arturo Vidal has made it clear he wants an important role in the team.

Frenkie de Jong is fit and available and probably one of the first names on the teamsheet these days after Lionel Messi, unlike Carles Alena who is unlikely to be involved at all.

Attack

Ousmane Dembele has been ruled out of action for 10 weeks which should mean Antoine Griezmann will definitely feature against his former team.

Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez should complete the attack, although Carles Perez and Ansu Fati trained with the first team on Friday and may make the squad.

Possible XI: Ter Stegen; Roberto, Pique, Lenglet, Junior; De Jong, Vidal, Arthur; Messi, Suarez, Griezmann.

Suarez understands Griezmann’s Barca struggles

The striker says “it’s not easy” to adjust to life at Barca

Luis Suarez has offered some insight into Antoine Griezmann’s start to life at Barcelona and says it takes time for players to adapt to playing for the Catalan giants.

The France international has made a slow start after joining from Atletico Madrid in the summer for €120 million, but Suarez says he needs time to adapt.

“Obviously, it’s not easy for any player to start here in Barcelona,” he said.

“You need time in order to adapt. It takes time and matches and you are feeling better and feeling that your teammates are supporting you.

“But it is necessary to understand that he is not playing in his previous position and he is the one who is making a big effort to adapt to what Valverde is asking for. I did it too, as did Philippe, Neymar or Ousmane.

“Every player who arrives in Barcelona has a difficult first few months and first matches … people are looking at you with detail because of what Barcelona means, but he is quiet and confident because he has our support to play his best football.”

Source | OneFootball

Griezmann was dropped to the bench for Wednesday’s clash with Borussia Dortmund but came on after Dembele picked up an injury and bagged his fifth goal for his new club in a 3-1 win.

Dembele has now been ruled out for 10 months which means Griezmann will get plenty more chances to make an impact at Barca, starting on Sunday against former club Atletico Madrid.

“Come on guys, remember Rome was our fault, nobody else’s, don’t let the same thing happen. That was our fault, we can’t miss this opportunity. If we do it right, we’re there [in the final]. Come on guys, let’s take that one little step.”

Vidal warns Barca he’ll leave if he doesn’t feel important

FC Barcelona v Borussia Dortmund: Group F - UEFA Champions League Photo by TF-Images/Getty Images

The midfielder has spoken about his Camp Nou future

Arturo Vidal has been talking about his future at Barcelona and admitted he could look to leave if he stops feeling important at the club.

The Chile international moved to the Camp Nou from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2018 in what was a pretty surprise signing at the time.

Yet he’s become an important squad player for the club and has popped up with some crucial goals both this season and last.

However, Vidal is not a guaranteed starter, he’s only made three La Liga starts this season, and has suggested a lack of game time could see him move on.

“I would like to be here at Barcelona always but I must be objective and live day by day. If in December or when the season ends, that I don’t feel I’m important here, I will have to find a solution and broaden my horizons to be important.”

Source | TV3

Reports this season have suggested Inter Milan could move for Vidal in January and that he has emerged as a top priority for boss Antonio Conte.

The champions face Atletico Madrid on Sunday

Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak has been explaining why he loves playing Barcelona and Lionel Messi ahead of Sunday’s clash at the Wanda Metropolitano.

The two teams will clash for the first time in La Liga in 2019-20 in Madrid with Barca going into the game three points ahead of their rivals in the table.

Oblak says he always wants to beat the best and is confident his team can take all three points against Ernesto Valverde’s side.

“He [Messi] is one of the best players in history and Barcelona are very lucky to have him. I love playing against the best, so it motivates me.

“Both Simeone and the players want to win every game we play. So against Barcelona it will be the same.

“If we are going to get what we want or not, it is impossible to say. But I have no doubt, we have the equipment and what is necessary to beat anyone, including Barcelona.“

Atletico head into the match on a disappointing run of form. Simeone’s side have won only one of their last six matches in all competitions but may fancy their chances given Barca’s troubles on their road this season.

Alena loan would make him a better player, says Kluivert

SD Eibar SAD v FC Barcelona - La Liga Photo by Juan Manuel Serrano Arce/Getty Images

The midfielder could leave Barcelona in January

Barcelona sporting director Patrick Kluivert has been talking about the possibility of Carles Alena leaving on loan and feels a move could make him a better player.

Alena is having a tough time at Camp Nou this season and has not featured since the opening days, when he was hooked at half-time of Barca’s 1-0 defeat at Athletic Bilbao.

He’s frequently found himself left out of the matchday squad and speculation has surfaced that he could be off in the January transfer window.

Kluivert says a temporary move could be a good idea to allow the 21-year-old some playing time and aid his development.

“It would not be bad to let Carles Aleñá leave on loan so he gets minutes and experience and returns a better player. Players like Aleñá or Riqui Puig have to look for their future and do their best for themselves and for the club.”

Source | Onda Cero’s El Transistor

Getafe are the latest club to be linked with a loan move for Alena. Cadena Cope have reported Alena is open to a move to the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez but has also attracted interest from Celta Vigo, Real Betis and Granada.

Three reasons why David Villa was a cut above the rest

FBL-ESP-RACING-SANTANDER-BARCELONA Photo credit should read RAFA RIVAS/AFP via Getty Images

The ex-Barcelona striker is set to hang up his boots

David Villa has announced he is set to retire from football and the world is nothing but grateful to the Spaniard for his exemplary performances and dedication to every team he played for. Sporting Gijon, Zaragoza, Valencia, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, New York City FC, Melbourne City FC and Vissel Kobe - so many clubs and continents and one man to experience them all; the former Spanish attacker was also the first player to hit 50 goals for his country and bagged the prestigious silver boot at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, along with a FIFPRO World 11 place that year. Here are three of the many, many qualities El Guaje has that made him a cut above the rest:

Ambidexterity

Barcelona v Malaga - La Liga Photo by David Ramos/Getty Images

What most attackers can’t do with one foot, Villa used to do with two. Shoot, dribble, make cutting passes and score goals - everything with twin precision and power. He was one of the most feared marksmen in the world and his ambidexterity greatly added to that. Today, not many players possess this ability to use both feet equally well. Football academies should really train their young starlets for ambidexterity because there’s no doubt that one day it will definitely bear fruit.

Versatility

Barcelona v Racing Santander - La Liga Photo by David Ramos/Getty Images

Because of his ambidexterity, he could slot into any position the team demanded. A supporting forward in a 4-4-2, a left/right winger or even a center forward in a 4-3-3, not to forget attacking midfielder supplying quality passes. Such was the range of this great player he was a star in any team he played. To sum up his superiority as a versatile player, here is what Johan Cruyff once said about him: “Villa is not only there to finish plays. Villa is synonymous with depth. It means always being ready to open passing lanes, to draw defenders and thus free space for others.”

Tremendous work rate and passion

Real Madrid v Barcelona - La Liga Photo by Jasper Juinen/Getty Images

While his main task was to create and score goals, David Villa was also famed for his exemplary work rate to snatch the ball from opponents. His movement on and off the ball made him a tough presence on the field. Villa wasn’t as physically as strong as others but that didn’t bother him while making a run for the ball.

Also, whichever team he represented, he ushered in passion and dedication for the team as well as the game. Look at the way he celebrated his victories, look at the way he kissed the team crest as he scored, look at the way he represented so many teams yet there isn’t one fanbase that dislikes him. They all hold him in the highest of regards and so do we.

While we may no longer see him on the pitch, we will definitely miss him, or at least a part of him, when a player exhibits one of his many qualities. Until then, happy retirement, legend. You will always be missed.

Report: Dembele may need surgery to cure injury problems

UEFA Champions League”FC Barcelona v Borussia Dortmund”

The Frenchman could miss the next three months

Ousmane Dembele’s injury problems keep on making news, and there are reports he may need to undergo surgery which would rule him out for three months.

AS report that the Frenchman has suffered “a relapse of a thigh muscle injury in his right leg” which he first suffered against Celta Vigo at the end of last season.

The club are currently trying to decide what is the best way to treat the problem. At the moment it is reported that they haven’t ruled out the option of surgery.

Dembele is already expected to be out for five weeks but surgery would mean a three-month lay-off, although the player is said to be “willing to accept any solution” and wants a “permanent fix.”

Barcelona have only confirmed so far he has a thigh injury but an update is expected on Friday. Either way it seems he won’t see him again until 2019, but if it is decided that he needs to go under the knife he is unlikely to return until the end of February.

The kit is all yellow with four red diagonal stripes and comes with yellow shorts and socks.

It was launched with the tagline Ho portem dins (it’s deep within us) in relation to the club’s Catalan identity.

Sunday’s match will be a tough test for Barca and there will be plenty of focus on Antoine Griezmann as he returns to his former team.

Ernesto Valverde’s side are three points ahead of Atleti in the table but have struggled on their travels this season.

Dani Olmo edging closer to Barcelona move - report

Spain v Romania -EURO Qualifier Photo by David S. Bustamante/Soccrates/Getty Images

The young winger could be returning next season

Barcelona feel they have the signing of Dani Olmo “under control,” according to Mundo Deportivo. Olmo played in the Barcelona academy for 7 years before joining Dinamo Zagreb, where he has broken into the first team and now is the main star.

He has advanced through Spain’s youth ranks and recently made his debut for the senior team, scoring a goal in the process. Dinamo themselves reportedly know they cannot hold onto him much longer, having already rejected offers of 30 million euros last summer, thinking they could earn even more next year.

Barcelona reportedly have a good relationship with the 21-year-old player’s father, Miquel Olmo, and his agent Juanma López. Barça’s scout that keeps tabs on Olmo is none other than Bojan Krkić, Sr., the father of Bojan Krkić, a former Barcelona player and La Masia prodigy.

Ousmane Dembélé will reportedly miss rest of the year including el Clásico

FC Barcelona v Borussia Dortmund: Group F - UEFA Champions League Photo by Jose Breton/Pics Action/NurPhoto via Getty Images

The extent of the injury is not yet fully known

Ousmane Dembélé will not play until 2020, missing el Clásico, according to Diario AS. While tests are still to be done to confirm his injury, initial reports suggest the Frenchman has a tear in his biceps of his right leg, which would put him out for five weeks.

In addition, it seems this injury is a relapse of an old injury he suffered last season. He will miss a minimum of six matches, including against Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid, if that is the case. His return would come on January 4th against Espanyol, at the earliest.

Another problem is the psychological aspect. Dembélé was pictured crying as he exited the pitch yesterday. Will he be able to get back to his best not just physically, but mentally?

Dembélé has had terrible luck since joining Barcelona from Borussia Dortmund when it comes to injuries. This is just the latest setback for the iwnger.

The Barcelona boss offered his thoughts on the match

Ernesto Valverde offered his thoughts on Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann as well as Ousmane Dembele’s injury problems after Wednesday’s win over Dortmund.

Messi, Griezmann and Luis Suarez were all on target to send Barcelona into the knockout stages as group winners on a good night for the Barca coach.

Much has been made of the understanding between Griezmann and Messi in the Barca attack, but Valverde says the two players have a good relationship on the pitch.

“Luis and Leo understand each other perfectly because they have been together for a long time. At first it wasn’t like that,” he said.

”Messi is an extraordinary passer and Griezmann was unmarked as well. You just have to find the timing. And of Leo’s match, what am I going to say? It was amazing. It is not only what he does, but when he does it.”

Valverde also spoke about seeing Dembele suffer more injury frustration and go off in the first half of the match. Barca have since confirmed it is a thigh problem but are yet to reveal how long they expect him to be out for.

The Barca boss admitted it was bad news for the club and the player but said they will do all they can to help him get back out on the pitch.

“I don’t know if it’s a relapse or what leg it is. It has been a rare move because it has been in a jump, in which the leg has gone backwards. I don’t know. Right now we are sad for him because we are qualified but the bad news is the injury. We know he is suffering and we will see if we can help him.”

Barcelona’s focus will now return to La Liga. They head to Atletico Madrid on Sunday and then welcome Real Mallorca to Camp Nou a week later.

The Frenchman picked up another problem against Dortmund

Luis Suarez urged Barcelona’s doctors to find a solution to Ousmane Dembele’s ongoing injury problems after Wednesday’s 3-1 win over Borussia Dortmund.

The French forward started the game at the Camp Nou but was forced off after 25 minutes with yet another injury. Barcelona confirmed after the match it’s a thigh problem.

Dembele could not hide his frustration at the latest setback, throwing his boots off and leaving the pitch almost in tears to be replaced by Antoine Griezmann.

Suarez said after the match he hopes he is not out for too long and urged Barca to figure out a way to help the 22-year-old stay fit.

“The doctors have to try and find a solution to his injuries,” he said. “[They have to find out] how he keeps getting injured after he has recovered. We hope he’s back with us soon.”

Barcelona are yet to confirm how long Dembele will be sidelined for. He’s already missed six games this season because of injury and two more for his red card against Sevilla, let’s hope he recovers quickly this time around.

Favre: Messi is almost unstoppable when he gets the ball | Marca

Borussia Dortmund boss Lucien Favre admitted there’s not much you can do when Lionel Messi is in possession of a football. He said: “He played as a false nine. He moves very well between the lines and when he receives the ball, he’s almost unstoppable. You have to foul him because if not, he has incredible acceleration. His final ball is very dangerous.”

Dortmund defender Mats Hummels was also full of praise for Lionel Messi after the Barcelona captain produced another masterclass in the Champions League. Three things we learned from Barca 3-1 Dortmund

FC Barcelona v Borussia Dortmund: Group F - UEFA Champions League Photo by Quality Sport Images/Getty Images

Ernesto Valverde’s side progress as group winners

Messi hits 700 in style

Another day, another landmark and another Lionel Messi masterclass against Borussia Dortmund that left pretty much everyone drooling afterwards.

The GOAT marked his 700th appearance in some style, scoring, grabbing two assists, hitting the woodwork and running the Dortmund defence ragged all night.

Ernesto Valverde branded his performance “amazing” after the match, Marc-Andre ter Stegen went for “not normal,” while Mats Hummels said he’s “the best footballer I have ever seen – period.”

Dortmund boss Lucien Favre also offered his thoughts by saying basically the only way to stop him is to foul him. That’s if you can catch him in the first place, Lucien.

Messi’s goal means he has now scored against 34 different teams in the Champions League, more than anyone else in Europe’s top competition.

His performance also lifted Barcelona from their weekend torpor against Leganes and ensured they head into the knockout stages with a game to spare and with top spot in Group F assured.

Griezmann makes most of Dembele injury

One of the main talking points from Ernesto Valverde’s starting XI was the Barcelona manager’s decision to start Ousmane Dembele ahead of Antoine Griezmann.

Yet the French forward only managed 25 minutes against his former club before being forced off with the ninth injury of his Barcelona career. More frustration for a player who simply has not been able to catch a break during his time at the Camp Nou.

On came Griezmann and put in a much-improved display. The French was heavily involved and scored a much-needed goal after being teed up by a brilliant pass from Lionel Messi.

FC Barcelona v Borussia Dortmund: Group F - UEFA Champions League Photo by Pablo Morano/MB Media/Getty Images

Valverde said after the match “they understand each other very well” while Clement Lenglet called Griezmann “spectacular” and joked about speculation his team-mate doesn’t get on with Messi by adding “now the rumours can stop, you can’t say anything.”

This was the kind of performance needed by Griezmann particularly ahead of Sunday’s crunch La Liga clash that sees him head back to former team Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Junior Firpo shines on Champions League debut

Junior Firpo was handed his Champions League debut on Wednesday at left-back in the absence of the injured Jordi Alba and did not disappoint in an assured showing.

The 23-year-old hasn’t been given too many chances to impress this season following his signing from Real Betis over the summer but made the most of it against Dortmund.

He seemed far happier and keen to get forward than he did against Leganes and tweeted after the match his debut “couldn’t have gone better.”

Junior has had to be patient at Barca this season, but this was a promising performance that will offer hope the 23-year-old can go on and become a success at Camp Nou.

He will surely improve too as he adjusts to life at Barcelona and will hopefully provide some real competition for Alba as the season progresses.

El Pistolero is still firing for Barcelona

FC Barcelona v Borussia Dortmund: Group F - UEFA Champions League Photo by Quality Sport Images/Getty Images

Luis Suarez not yet a busted flush

Before this match kicked off, supporters had already rounded on Ernesto Valverde because of his team selection.

The absences of Arthur and Antoine Griezmann had the Camp Nou faithful and the Twittersphere go into meltdown, but both decisions weren’t without merit given the fixtures ahead.

Another injury to Ousmane Dembele has ensured Griezmann will have a few weeks to finally bed down into his role, whilst Ivan Rakitic is unlikely to keep his place meaning a swift return for Arthur.

One player who has also been much maligned of late fully justified his inclusion - even if Luis Suarez is still almost certainly assured of his place however poor his form is.

He can be doing nothing for the majority of a game, but give him a sniff of a goal and he’s still amongst the world’s best finishers.

Age has wearied him in terms of his lack of pace, but it hasn’t diminished his goal scoring instincts, because even before his opener, a marginal - but correct - offside decision denied him a first of the night.

Leo Messi’s intervention handed the Uruguayan the perfect opportunity to receive the accolades shortly after, before Suarez quickly returned the favour.

It’s been heavily rumoured that El Pistolero will soon be off to MLS and will spearhead David Beckham’s Inter Miami side.

The player himself has even admitted that a move to the USA is of interest. Furthermore, he is on board with Barca’s plan to bring in a younger centre-forward for some much-needed competition.

But is he being put out to pasture a little too early?

With 10 goals in all competitions already in 2019/20, he’s keeping pace with the best in Europe without even breaking sweat.

Add the nous that he has in the striking role to those figures, and there’s not another centre-forward I’d rather see wearing the Blaugrana No.9.

If Barcelona are to be successful this season, both domestically and in Europe, then Suarez is every bit as important as any other component in the team.

There’s been a lot written about Griezmann not playing centrally and Valverde therefore not getting the best of him, but it’s clear that he’s not a striker in the Suarez mould.

That being a pure No.9 who knows where the goal is and doesn’t need asking twice to deliver.

When all is said and done, that’s surely all we want from the barrel-chested front man isn’t it? Or should loftier expectations be levelled in his direction?

Kai Havertz prefers Barcelona to Real Madrid - report

VfL Wolfsburg v Bayer 04 Leverkusen - Bundesliga Photo by Oliver Hardt/Bongarts/Getty Images

The young German star has many of the biggest clubs in the world on alert

Kai Havertz has a “free choice” on who to join next year, according to Sport Bild. The 20-year-old Bayer Leverkusen playmaker has the eyes of seven of Europe’s biggest clubs, it is rumored. Bayern Munich, FC Barcelona, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Real Madrid are all in for Germany’s newest star.

However, the two teams best positioned to land him, according to the report, are Bayern Munich and Barcelona. Bayern tend to gobble up Bundesliga talent, so that is no surprise. In addition, the possible appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as Bayern coach could help them land Havertz, as the report says he appreciates the Argentine coach’s style.

However, Barcelona is “the dream club of his youth,” and that could be a big advantage for the Catalans. Another thing is whether they would consider signing Pochettino as manager, as well.

Despite the fact that those two clubs are considered the favorites to get him, the fact of the matter is that Havertz could still go to any of the big clubs mentioned.

Messi ‘not normal’ against Dortmund - Ter Stegen

The goalkeeper praised the GOAT on his 700th Barcelona appearance

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen was full of praise for Lionel Messi after his performance in the team’s 3-1 win over Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday.

Messi marked his 700th Barcelona outing in style with a goal and two assists as the club secured top spot in the group and progression to the knockout stages.

Here’s what Ter Stegen made of Messi and Barca’s performance at the Camp Nou.

“We played some good football tonight. We managed to score the first goal, which was what we intended.

“We hope we will be able to prove in the last group stage match that we deserve to lead the section.

“700 matches for Barcelona is not normal and neither is what [Messi] did on the pitch. He is simply the best footballer in the world.”

The GOAT starred against Borussia Dortmund

Lionel Messi wore a Barcelona shirt for the 700th time on Wednesday and played a starring role to lead his side to a 3-1 win over Borussia Dortmund at the Camp Nou.

The Barca captain scored and picked up two assists against Lucien Favre’s side after becoming just the second player in the club’s history to reach 700 appearances.

Here’s how it all breaks down:

Messi also hit another new landmark against Dortmund, his goal ensuring he’s now scored against more teams in the Champions League than any other player.

Messi now has 10 goals and eight assists for Barca in all competitions this season despite missing the start of the campaign through injury.

Barça 3-1 BVB: Recap

FC Barcelona v Borussia Dortmund: Group F - UEFA Champions League Photo by Quality Sport Images/Getty Images

Group winners!

Barcelona have won Group F and will play in the knockout stages of the 2019-20 season of the Champions League thanks to a big 3-1 win over Borussia Dortmund at Camp Nou. Barça weren’t the usual garbage from previous weeks and actually looked good at times against a dangerous Dortmund team, and Lionel Messi put on a show once again with a goal and two assists to send Barça to the Round of 16.

FIRST HALF

It was a shaky start for Barça as their defense allowed Dortmund one or two very dangerous chances, but it didn’t take long for the Blaugrana to take control and start creating chances through some really nice runs by the full-backs and a very active Lionel Messi looking to link up with his teammates around the box.

And then the goals came: the first was ruled out for offside when Luis Suárez was a little too eager to make a run before Messi had time to make the pass, but the plan worked the second time when Leo found the Uruguayan for an easy finish. Three minutes later the home team took advantage of a horrible pass by Mats Hummels, Messi and Suárez made a very nice one-two and the captain found the back of the net.

At halftime Barça were playing well and in complete control, and they looked set to win the game and the group.

SECOND HALF

Barça made it clear they wanted to give Dortmund the ball and try to kill the game on the counter, and it felt like a third goal was inevitable with every crazy run by Messi. And in one of those the captain made a brilliant pass to Antoine Griezmann for a very nice finish, and Barça had the win — and the group — in the bag.

Dortmund did not give up after conceding the third and continued to attack and made positive substitutions to have more players going forward, and they got a goal back thanks to a beautiful strike by Jadon Sancho. The young Englishman came off the bench and was a huge threat, and if not for a huge save by Ter Stegen he would have made it 3-2 with five minutes go and things would have been really interesting.

But the score stayed as it was, and the final whistle came to end a big night for Barça. Decent performance, a monster Messi game, and there’s no more group stage drama.

Dembele forced off injured against Dortmund

The Frenchman picked up a problem against his former club

Ousmane Dembele has suffered yet another injury blow after being forced off in the first half of Barcelona’s clash with Borussia Dortmund.

The Frenchman got the nod to start in attack against his former side ahead of Antoine Griezmann and lined up alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.

However, he lasted only 26 minutes after picking up a problem that saw him throw his boots off in frustration and look to be close to tears as he went off.

It’s not clear yet what the injury is or how long he will be out for, but we’ll let you know as soon as Barcelona offer an update on the 22-year-old.

Here’s how Barcelona can qualify for the UEFA Champions League knockouts

Borussia Dortmund v FC Barcelona: Group F - UEFA Champions League Photo by Boris Streubel/Getty Images

The easiest way? Win.

FC Barcelona can win their group and qualify for the UEFA Champions League knockouts today with a win against Borussia Dortmund. That’s the easiest way for the Catalans to advance. Doing so would put them on 11 points, with Dortmund stuck on 7 and Inter Milan on, at best, 7. In the last match either Dortmund or Inter would only be able to get to 10 points, still one short of Barça.

However, other scenarios exist.

Draw vs. Dortmund, win vs. Inter Milan

A draw for Barcelona would put them on 9 points and Dortmund on 8. Inter would once again, have at best 7. This would still have Barcelona leading the group, meaning if they were to win against Inter, they would win the group outright.

Draw vs. Dortmund, lose vs. Inter Milan

However things could get dicey in that last match if they drew today. If Inter were to win both of their remaining games, that would catapult them to 10 points, with Barça stuck on 9. Then, Dortmund could knock Barcelona out by winning against Slavia Prague and getting to 11. Alternatively, Dortmund losing or drawing would mean that even with a loss against Inter, Barça would be through, albeit as runners-up. In the case of a BVB loss, Barcelona would have 9 points and Dortmund still 8. However, if the Germans drew, that would put both teams on 9. Still, Barcelona own the tiebreaker having won the first meeting between the sides.

Draw vs. Dortmund, draw vs. Inter Milan

Two draws would put Barcelona on 10 points and secure qualification. Dortmund would have at least 8 points, but potentially 11 if they won the last game. If Barcelona draw twice, and Dortmund win the last game, both sides go through with the Germans as group winners. However, a draw or loss by Dortmund would allow Barcelona through as group winners.

Lose vs. Dortmund, win vs. Inter Milan

Barcelona and Dortmund would qualify. Dortmund would be the group winners if they won the last match, but Barcelona would win the group if Dortmund failed to win against Slavia.

Lose vs. Dortmund, draw vs. Inter Milan

Barcelona would qualify, but only as runners-up.

Lose vs. Dortmund, lose vs. Inter Milan

Barcelona would be out if Inter won against Slavia today. However, the Blaugrana would still qualify if Inter lost against Slavia. A draw between the Italians and the Czechs would lead to a tiebreaker, if then Inter beat Barcelona. Inter would qualify if they won by more than one goal against the Catalans. However, if Inter won by precisely one goal, we would go further down the tiebreaker rabbit hole. Barcelona could still do it through away goals, or goal difference, or disciplinary points, or even the UEFA club coefficient. Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.

Ansu Fati a “player to follow” says Spain manager Luis Enrique

Leganes v FC Barcelona - La Liga Santander Photo by David S. Bustamante/Soccrates/Getty Images

The Barcelona wunderkindis being monitored by Spain

FC Barcelona prodigy Ansu Fati has caught the eye of Spain boss, and former Barcelona coach, Luis Enrique. Speaking at his first press conference after retaking the reigns of his job as Spain’s manager following an unexpected resignation due to personal tragedy earlier this year, Luis Enrique said he had his eye on Fati.

“Of course i have followed Ansu Fati. How couldn’t you? He plays for Barça. We know his potential,” he said.

“But what is evident is that there is a stage of development that very few players can skip. It has to be a slow maturation process.”

Fati turned 17 this October but has already started matches for Barcelona’s senior team and even scored a few goals. Aged only 16, Fati became the youngest player in the history of La Liga to score and assist in the same match, as well.

He was born in Guinea-Bissau but has represented Spain at U21 level. He was initially scouted by Spain to join the U17 team for the U17 World Cup but he ended up skipping that level and playing for the U21 team. There are some who say his debut for Spain’s full senior team is right around the corner, but it seems Luis Enrique is worried about potential burnout and wants to take it slowly.
