Jasper Cillessen Pondering Barcelona Exit

The goalkeeper is said to be thinking about a departure

Jasper Cillessen is considering leaving Barcelona after not playing the Spanish Supercup, says Mundo Deportivo. The goalkeeper had hoped to play the match as he had rhythm from preseason matches and rest from not playing the FIFA World Cup, but Marc-André ter Stegen was chosen in goal instead.

Ter Stegen had a great match, making crucial saves, including a stoppage-time penalty block. Cillessen will have a hard time unseating him from playing either in La Liga or the UEFA Champions League, relegating the Dutch international to Copa del Rey duties.

AS Roma were said to be the team to push the strongest for Cillessen, but they were put off due to Barcelona’s asking price. While his release clause stands at 60 million euro, Barça were said to be willing to accept 30 million. But even that reduced sum proved too much for the Italian club, who instead opted for Robin Olsen, who cost only 8.5 million.

Chelsea and Liverpool were considered possible destinations as well, but they opted for Kepa Arrizabalaga and Alisson, respectively, and the Premier League market is closed now.

Cillessen is waiting to see if another offer comes his way now, but the report notes that if that doesn’t come to fruition, he’s ready to give it his all to convince Ernesto Valverde that he deserves more playing time.
