WATCH: How VAR Worked for Barcelona-Sevilla

Here’s a taste of what we can expect in La Liga

FC Barcelona won the Spanish Supercup 2-1 over Sevilla, but before that, came a groundbreaking moment in Spanish football history. For the first time in a match between two Spanish teams, the referees were allowed to use the Video Assistant Referee (VAR.)

When Pablo Sarabia scored the opener for Sevilla, his celebrations were halted as the referee, Carlos del Cerro Grande, checked with the VAR room to make sure the player was not offside.

Jesús Gil Manzano in the VAR booth quickly got on it. Let’s see how it went:

The whole process takes a bit less than a minute and a half. Del Cerro Grande signals to the players, and we hear Gil Manzano communicate to the ref.

GM: “OK, OK. He’s on. He’s on. Let’s go, let’s go. Let’s go. Let’s go. Offside, we have to see it. We have to see it. It’s close. Close. I want to see the offside. Check, check check! A little before. A little before. There. OK. He’s in line. He’s in line. OK.”

DCG: “I’m waiting for you to tell me.”

GM: “Wait a second. Wait a second, Carlos.”

DCG: “They’re checking it, calm.”

GM: “Carlos, it’s a good goal. Goal by #17.”

DCG: “Good goal?”

GM: “Good goal. #17. Goal. Good. Goal. Goal. Goal.”

The decision was correctly given by the ref and correctly confirmed by the VAR. It was a tight call, but one that was clearly onside.

Will VAR be this quick and incident-free during the season? Well.. l
