Plus, Sevilla the early leaders
Levante shocked Real Betis 3-0, while a projected top four clash ended in a draw as Atlético Madrid - Valencia ended 1-1. Huesca made history, earning their first top-division win in their existance. Meanwhile, Sevilla became the leaders, at least for the first week, while the big two got off to good wins.
Levante Shock Betis
Betis had been hyped as one of the teams to watch in La Liga, with respected coach Quique Setién in charge and a bevy of new transfers. Instead, they were trounced by a resilient Levante side, who continuously caught them on the break. Betis were shaken by a goal from Roger Marti in the 38th minute, tapping in a cross from Jason. José Luis Morales doubled the advantage on 54th minutes, with a brilliant goal after a series of dribbles that must be seen. And with Betis pushed all the way up looking for a way back, Morales made it 3-0 in stoppage time.
Atlético & Valencia Draw
Two teams that are considered favorites for a top four finish, and even title contenders in Atlético’s case, met on Monday. Ángel Correa scored the opener for Atléti after an assist from Antoine Griezmann left him all alone in front of goal. But Valencia fought back and got their equalizer through Rodrigo Moreno, after Daniel Wass’s audacious volleyed assist.
Huesca Make History
First match in La Liga, first goal, and first win. What a day for Huesca! Álex Gallar dribbled by several opponents to put them up 1-0 within five minutes against Eibar, and then Gallar doubled their lead when an inswinging free kick pass sailed over everyone and, accidentally, into the net. Gonzalo Escalante got one back for Eibar, but it wasn’t enough to spoil the party. Huesca won 2-1.
Other Games
Sevilla are the leaders of La Liga having a +3 goal difference, and having scored the most goals, four. André Silva is the top-scorer after his hat trick, along with one from Franco Vázquez, led Sevilla to a 4-1 win over Rayo Vallecano. Real Madrid downed Getafe 2-0, while Barcelona beat Deportivo Alavés 3-0 as the big two start their bids for the title.
