Marc Cucurella and Miranda are ready for first-team action
Barcelona’s transfer activities this summer have been different from what we’ve come to expect from this board. While “Project 22” was an ambitious move on the part of Robert Fernandez, it failed significantly and only Samuel Umtiti stands tall from that group of players today. Lucas Digne was another such player who arrived with high hopes but failed to break into the Barcelona first-team and displace Jordi Alba.
The Frenchman’s move to Everton has posed the question of whether Barcelona should sign someone new as backup to Jordi Alba. If this preseason is anything to go by, then the club wants to push one of Marc Cucurella and Miranda into the vacant role. The duo have impressed in the past couple of games despite their age and it’s expected that one of them is bound to make the jump.
Cucurella has been with the B-team for longer and is probably more ready for first-team football. His pace and aggression can be useful when defending counter-attacks and while his recent showings have been subpar, the scraggly haired defender is fast, intelligent and capable of providing width. Miranda, on the other hand, is more well-rounded and potentially has the brighter future of the duo.
While the choice remains with the hierarchy, there’s no wrong answer to this question. Both players have their pros and cons and no matter who gets promoted, the decision will have merit.
