Iniesta retires from Spain duty after World Cup exit

The midfielder has quit international football

Andres Iniesta announced his retirement from international football following Spain’s shock exit to Russia at the 2018 World Cup on Sunday.

La Roja were knocked out in the last 16 on penalties by the tournament hosts after the game finished 1-1 after extra time.

Iniesta announced after the match that he’ll be hanging up his international boots as his Spain career ends on a pretty sad night.

“It is a reality that is my last match with the national team,” he said

”Sometimes the endings are not as one dreams,” he added. “It is the saddest day of my career.”

The former Barcelona midfielder enjoyed a simply brilliant career with Spain and made 131 appearances for the national team.

He won the Euros in 2008 and 2012 and of course scored a memorable winner as La Roja beat Holland to win the 2010 World Cup.

What a legend.
